Missing teen found at older man's home in Dearborn Heights after running from youth facility
Dearborn Heights — A missing 16-year-old girl who police feared was being sexually trafficked has been found, Dearborn Heights police said Thursday. Police found the girl safe Wednesday afternoon around Inkster and Warren Avenue at the home of a 62-year-old man, who has been arrested. The man, whose name hasn't been released, hasn't been formally charged. According to police, the teen had been missing since March 14, when she ran away from Vista Maria in Dearborn Heights, a youth residential treatment center. Dearborn Heights Police Chief Ahmed Haidar said investigators received an "amazing" number of tips that eventually led them to find the girl. He said the press, community and police should be commended for their work. The U.S. Marshals Service helped with the search, he said. "We only were able to recover her because of the help that you guys provided to us, and because of the citizens who reached out to us with their tips that allowed us to be able to locate this young woman," Haidar said. The teen had been staying with the 62-year-old since March 17, according to Haidar, and they met around the area of Joy and Inkster Roads. He said it doesn't appear she was physically forced or coerced into staying with him, but that she was in a vulnerable position because she needed money and a place to stay. However, acknowledged she could not consent to sexual contact because she is underage. "I believe this was a child in need that had nowhere to go, that was lost," he said. Haidar said investigators actually spoke to the man while canvassing an area where the girl had reportedly been spotted, and he claimed he had not seen her. The girl is in the custody of Child Protective Services. Haidar said she will not be returned to Vista Maria. He said the police department has investigations ongoing into the center involving staff members and other young girls at the facility, though he did not elaborate. Craig Fahle, a spokesperson for Vista Maria, said the facility is not aware of what the police chief was referencing. "Nobody has contacted them about any investigation," he said. A statement on the facility's website said it is "relieved and grateful" the girl has been found safe. "Our thanks go out to the many law enforcement agencies that worked hard to find her, especially the Dearborn Heights Police Department. We appreciate the outpouring of support from the community, including the many tips that helped police in their search." The police department has not presented its case to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, and Haidar declined to give the man's name because he has not yet been charged. He has refused to speak to police since his arrest, the chief said. Police believe she was trafficked at least twice since running away from the facility. He said one person of interest is a man in his mid-30s, but they don't know yet who another person of interest is. jcardi@detroitnews.com This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Missing teen found at older man's home in Dearborn Heights after running from youth facility

Dearborn Heights police believe missing girl, 16, may be a trafficking victim
Dearborn Heights police are seeking tips on the whereabouts of a missing 16-year-old girl who they believe was sexually assaulted at least twice after running away from a residential treatment center for teens. Chief Ahmed Haidar said Thursday he has concerns that Tasia Keaton may be involved in human trafficking, as there were two occasions after she ran away March 14 from Vista Maria in Dearborn Heights where she was picked up off the street by a man, taken to a hotel, then returned to the street. "We've been working around the clock to try to locate her," Haidar said at a press conference Thursday. "It's been close to a month and we haven't had no activity, no leads, no tips and that's really concerning for us. ... When an investigation goes this long you start to panic a bit." Tasia is 5-feet-2-inches tall and is about 130 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. She is known to change her hair color, Haidar said. She ran away from Vista Maria March 14 and was seen on surveillance video later that night or early in the morning March 15 being picked up by a man on Stout Street and Joy Road in Detroit, Haidar said. Police believe she was taken to a hotel and assaulted, then was returned to the Stout and Joy area. Tasia and another girl were seen sleeping in Detroit, and on March 17, police saw on surveillance video that she was picked up by a different man, taken to a Redford hotel, assaulted and then brought back. She was last seen March 17 walking south on Beech Daly from Joy Road in Detroit. "There's been nothing since then," Haidar said. Trisha Wade, Tasia's aunt, said she is frustrated at the lack of information she has gotten about her niece's disappearance. She didn't know anything about the sightings or possible trafficking until Haidar's press conference Thursday, and did not find out Tasia was missing until three days after she ran away. Wade said Tasia has been at Vista Maria for a little over a year. "I just want her found," Wade said. "Nobody’s mad at her for running off, after what we heard about Vista Maria. I just want her back home safe." Police believe Tasia is still in the Metro Detroit area, possibly in Dearborn Heights, Haidar said. She has family in the Flint area and in Tennessee. She may also be seeking to travel to Grand Rapids. Anyone with information on Tasia can contact the Dearborn Heights Police Department at 313-277-6770, Crimestoppers or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST, or 911. There is a $5,500 reward for information on Tasia's whereabouts. "We're in fear that somebody has this young lady and knows her whereabouts and won't release her to us or let us speak to her," Haidar said. kberg@detroitnews.com This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Dearborn Heights police believe missing girl, 16, may be a trafficking victim
