#debanking-risks
People do NOT realize debanking risks. Still gotta make rent but ALL bills/subs will get bounced to a dead account. What if you forget to transfer your phone plan by the 1st & it gets shut off? Now none of your 2FA work and you have to go in person to get it turned back on. It's devastating

Why did banks close his accounts? “Debanking occurs when banks… believe they pose financial, legal or reputational risks to the banks.” and for “ALM” (anti money laundering) purposes. What a sleaze. This was 2021!

They've got to establish their narrative so that they can claim the risks we're warning of are all lies.

They'd rather do that than admit there's things they wouldn't be willing to risk 'for the cause' (like jail time and debanking) cause that would just blast their self-identity to pieces.

When accessing financial services, adult industry professionals regularly face the risks of losing revenue, financial stability, or access to their money altogether. Miss Adah Vonn talks about the importance of advocating for banking rights in the industry. End Debanking!

I think people are conflating the CFPB and Treasury with respect to debanking. Banks have been reluctant to deal with certain industries bc they violate federal law (marijuana) or have real or perceived money laundering risks (crypto, some fintech, dealings in high drug-trafficking countries).

Important editorial (paywall) by @internetmaggie.com & Val Webber on Canadian banks' debanking sex workers with claims of high-risk transactions & risks to corporate reputations. Result is financial discrimination & stigma.

Opinion: Moral judgment has no place in deciding who gets to bank or not
By treating sex-work earnings as criminal proceeds, banks have too much power to decide who gets to use the economic infrastructure that makes participation in society possible

The crypto crowd has entered the debanking chat. This whole debate is a chimera with multiple interests leaning on each others' rhetoric to advance their own ends. The line in the sand here is that crypto is still high risk! via @opinion.bloomberg.com

It is fraud to do what she suggested there. It risks completely debanking the marks who fall for it.

That's a big ask - to open themselves up to legal liability and the possibility of financial ruin with debanking internationally while downplaying those risks.

It’s also not true because “debanking” mostly isn’t really a thing. Most banks won’t touch crypto because of the risks, both financial and legal, and they have mountains of evidence at this point to make that judgment.

Trump has sued Capital One, as well as JPMorgan Chase, for allegedly debanking him after he left office in 2021. Debanking occurs when banks shut down customer accounts because they believe they pose financial, legal or reputational risks to the banks.

And would this open up your friends to criminal liability and potentially financial ruin through debanking if down improperly? Are you failing to thoroughly explain and even downplaying the risks when brought up, all while refusing to be transparent about why you won't take those same risks?
