#decentralised
I'd say no. in theory a blockchain is decentralised, so there are multple copies of the "who's got what asset" ledgers floating around, so it shouldn't matter if a datacentre is down. The "contents of the wallet" are ephemeral and don't really live on one server or another.

I don't think that's how crypto works. One of the main attractions is that it's decentralised.

From energy crisis to energy transition: How renewables are reshaping energy security
For Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the crisis is also reshaping how the world understands the phrase “energy security.” For decades, that meant a country's reserves of oil and gas. Today, he says, countries want a system that is more diverse, decentralised and within their own control – and renewables are becoming central to that. From reserves to autonomy Speaking to UN News‘s Jing Zhang during the General Assembly's High-Level Week, Mr. La Camera traced today's thinking back to the oil shocks of the 1970s, when the world first treated energy security as a systemic concern and set up international bodies to stabilise markets. Back then, energy security meant one thing: reserves of oil and gas. “Countries have realized that a centralized energy system based on fossil fuel doesn't provide energy security,” he said. Fossil fuel supply is highly concentrated and much of it passes through a handful of maritime chokepoints, so a geopolitical shock can ripple through global markets within days. Renewables, he argued, offer the opposite: energy from many sources and places, owned by many different actors. Countries with a higher share of renewables, he noted, have generally weathered the current crisis...

The notion of a decentralised medium of exchange is a beautiful one, and I love Bitcoin as an idea and an experiment, but I find it extraordinarily technologically, economically and pragmatically over-optimistic to assume that it can ever scale to become the world's predominant financial instrument.

AI is still working through that, it doesn't fully work (both in terms of output and as a business), but the upsides are still tantalizing enough some people cling to them.

"Do you want to put your house deed on a decentralised ledger that can't be undone" is an easier proposition to handle.
October 12, 2026 at 8:20 PM
I don't think this is accurate, at least not for crypto stuff.

Crypto stuff worked. It work(s/ed) even better than AI, even. The blockchain is little more than a decentralised ledger, it worked. The problem with it was always it was stupid, and the tradeoffs were never worth the few, few upsides.

Many services are built with a centralised model. As an example, take Bluesky itself. Were Bsky to come under some sort of attack, the aggregation service - what brings us together, would be down. The same is not true for decentralised communications like Mastodon or Matrix.

I can confirm that us folks who have promoted a decentralised computing systems are feeling pretty smug right now.

While we're not quite as vulnerable to the same type of attack as Russia is, thanks to the hyperscalers being more ubiquitous, the same cannot be said about software.
1/ Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian data centres are having a severe impact due to the highly centralised nature of Russia's digital economy, in contrast to Ukraine's decentralised approach. Fears are growing that it could cause a banking crisis. ⬇️

Ukraine's new campaign of destroying Russia's data centers will prove devastating for Putin's economy and war machine if the White House is unable to prevent it.

The chaos we're already seeing across Russia is only four days into the campaign and 3 facilities targeted.

How many price shocks before governments get people off oil and gas?

Oil is moving through Hormuz again, but shipping remains dangerous and costly. People foot the bill.

END fossil fuel dependence. Push for PEACE and scale up decentralised RENEWABLES like wind and solar NOW.

How can independent journalism withstand authoritarian pressure? At a @revolutionale.bsky.social roundtable moderated by our Andreas Lamm, participants called for clearer digital regulation, a decentralised internet, and stronger protection for journalists facing threats and intimidation.

Whereas in the Baptist church, it's the fact that we are so decentralised and anti-authoritarian that has allowed some of us to register for same sex marriage, despite a majority being opposed.

You don't have to believe me though; you can look at the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where the Russian military has deliberately targeted energy infrastructure during the dead of winter as a tactic of war. In response, Ukraine has invested in decentralised renewable energy.

Russia had years and years to prepare. They're not doing this much to keep all the autocrats happy and in power and then let their propaganda machine be bombed like this. The internet is actually decentralised, and it's frustrating that the right understands that so much better than the left
For all this talk of Russian bots being defeated by the Yandex strikes I'm still getting the usual Matryoshka emails with the same fake news posts and purchased bot engagement. Seems more like wishful thinking based on misinterpreted data than reality.
