In older deglaciated Alpine areas, deformed wing virus increased markedly in wild bees. The pattern may reflect glacier retreat changing flower use and increasing contact at shared blooms. doi.org/hcgns9
Glacier retreat could promote the spread of diseases among bees
A study conducted in the Swiss Alps by the University of Lausanne and the University of Milan shows that glacier retreat and changing vegetation could influence the spread of certain pathogens between honeybees and wild bees.

🌿 New Paper Alert: Newly Forming Peatlands in Aotearoa/New Zealand! 🌿

Our study shows peat has been accumulating in a recently deglaciated valley in the Southern Alps, Aotearoa/New Zealand, since ∼1949 C.E. As glaciers retreat & climates warm, new peatlands could emerge—key for carbon storage. 1/🧵

Very excited to share our study of an ancient environmental genome extracted from lake sediment! It originates from a brown bear that lived around 9,600 years ago close to the last ice-sheet remains in northern Sweden, and has an unexpected mitochondrial haplogroup. 1/7 www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

The authors compare digital surface models derived from airborne ✈️ laser scans (2006-2017) to identify regions that produced most rock fall events and find that areas recently deglaciated and affected by permafrost🧊 disproportionately 📊 contribute to rockfall! Highly relevant results, check it out!

Spoiler alert: we're pretty confident that not only did high salinity bottom waters help sequester CO2 during the Last Ice Age, but it may have helped reorganize ocean circulation as the planet deglaciated!

🧊 Glacial retreat converts exposed landscapes from net carbon sinks to sources

A >125 m highstand would imply that the region was covered in an ice sheet during the last glaciation. The authors acknowledge that more work is needed to pinpoint the age of the highstand. The traditional story told by the Chugach may imply it deglaciated relatively late.

They find that the study site likely deglaciated after the final drainage of Lake Agassiz-Ojibway after the collapse of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, since there were no freshwater sediments. The δ¹⁸O fluctuations implies periods of freshwater input, possibly from the melting of glacial ice.

The ages indicate that some areas of northern Vancouver Island deglaciated by about 18,000 years ago, far earlier than many other places along the west coast. One of the sites provides some evidence of the so-called Meltwater Pulse 1a rapid sea level rise event.
