NEW BLOG: Contested Heritage: Venice’s Anti-Museum of Deindustrialisation.

We’re all looking forward to next summer’s conference in Venice. In preparation, read Gilda Zazzara's post on Capannone, the city’s industrial zone, and reflect on the institutionalization of workers’ memory.

We've been doing deindustrialisation since the late 70s. Longer, healthier and freer for some. Wasted lives in destitute, miserable, dead-end shitholes for the rest.

Many such towns were built around employer-organized mass tourism: when the industries died the tourism died with it.

(Plus such towns -- due to their surplus hotel accommodation -- are ideal places to cheaply house asylum seekers, thus inflaming the racists further.)

The politicals case for Welsh Statehood.

Political choices over the decades have meant deindustrialisation, poor investment, brain drain, decline of Cymraeg, housing crisis, a neoliberal core-periphery economy and a GDP gap that has grown linearly with poverty in Wales endemic.
Painful' years ahead, as living standards set to fall.

Household disposable income to fall by £1,050 or 3% by 2029.

That is a political choice.

1% have more wealth than 70% of the population combined.

Redistribution is off the political agenda.

Good news in the fight against deindustrialisation of Europe!

Today was a good day for democracy, not just in the United States but also here in the European Parliament and for our #shiprecycling industry! Let me explain.  🧵

I don’t disagree but, we’ve had 3 x female PMs in the UK. One was stabbed in the back (Theresa May) so couldn’t do much. The other 2 oversaw the forced deindustrialisation of the country, the other doubled mortgage payments. Both of these fucked up royal. They were conservatives, your republicans!

🔎 Focusing on Zasavje, a former Slovenian coal-mining region, she explored how industrial history, post-socialist deindustrialisation, and workers' experiences shape today's Just Transition.

Her research challenges the idea of a clear divide between industrial past and post-industrial future.

Try googling “colonial deindustrialisation”

You will see that what is being done to Scotland by the English is a will trodden path.

Refined oil products exported from Scotland to England replaced by extraction of crude oil to English refineries and expensive products exported to Scotland.

Andy Burnham went to Downing Street in July promising to reverse the "wrong turns" of British government work over the past 40 years. He cast his new administration as a "circuit breaker", promising a programmatic antidote to deindustrialisation, regional inequality and popular discontent - the damage done to the body politic by decades of neoliberalism. The budget delivered by Chancellor John Healey last week was competent, in parts clever.

#Burnham has moved away from the overly cautious Starmer but not by much; he lists 5 reasons for UK economic woes: deindustrialisation/deregulation/privatisation/austerity/Brexit. #Miliband has recognized Israeli genocide but not Burnham. The left is coming back to the UK, but not fast enough.
