Arrival of the Bull

Dienotherium cows & bulls do not work well together. The bulls are ill-tempered and disruptive at the best of times. When they come into musth, they are calmed (drugged) and brought to those cows in the Redwoods who are receptive. It's a whole thing. 🧵 1/5

A commissioned lineup of the proboscideans of Sukaya (the Africa-equivalent continent of a friend’s #worldbuilding project). Elephants are definitely becoming some of my favorite animals to draw! #specevo #Tyrannoc #elephants

(Deinotherium, as any fule kno, is an extinct genus of large, elephant-like proboscideans. Proboscideans! Oh, brave new world!)

As well as the mammoth, the original plan included a Deinotherium in the lake. bsky.app/profile/did:...

For day 9 of 2026 #SciArtSeptember #Ivory here is a Deinotherium sp.! Did you know there is a Deinotherium-namesake metal band in Taiwan? www.instagram.com/deinovore/ 🦑🐡🧪

- a plainsman is in the saddle. When he first rides in with Jobón's caravan returning from the Banyans, bringing with them a deinotherium bull, Angie notes the elaborately festooned trousers, and Kaila in turn illuminates their meaning.

Put that on the REF!

(Not actually joking, the REF can swallow a deinotherium baculum)

(Did deinotherium have a baculum?)

It's funny they're called deinotherium "cows" but are basically elephants 😅

Dangit, missed the alt-text for the deinotherium image. It shows a deinotherium with her trunk raised, displaying her lower mandible tusks. Two others walk by in the background.

Kuvnah, whose longhouse is the most southerly, has a tight relationship with the maosa of the Banyans, keeping track of the rhino and deinotherium bloodlines, aiding Sha'all the Domesticator guide their progress.

But the deinotherium cows are the real engine behind the massive longhouses. Able to haul entire felled trees and clear new ground with sheer muscle power.

They are bred in the Banyan Lowlands in the under-story of the acres-wide tree house.

Η ανασκαφή του Δεινοθηρίου στη θέση Γκέλα,Αγία Φωτιά Σητείας, είναι η σημαντικότερη παλαιοντολογική έρευνα του Μουσείου!🦴 The excavation of the Deinotherium at the Gela site, in Agia Fotia-Sitia,is the most significant paleontological research project carried out by the Museum!

It’s Deinotherium!

This guy was one of the largest mammals to ever walk the earth (walk not swim) growing up to 4 meters tall and weighing 12 tonnes!

What if there were anthro mammoths & mastodons? (Maybe we can throw in a stegodon or a Deinotherium in there as well)

Imagine stout, sturdy deinotherium trunks reaching up between the boughs upon which you walk, work, and live, begging for ripe figs from higher up where they don't reach. 😊

The eastern swamps are not inhabited by hominins. The maosa who tend, guide, and curate the banyans like giant bonsai to form their homes consider the swamp the extent of their range. The deinotherium herds they tend in the under-story of the banyans do use the swamps, though.

One thing Walking With Beasts did that the human evolution-specific group didn't was the reminder that Australopithecus co-existed with Chalicotheres and Deinotherium. Also helps to remember, too, that human ancestors have been recognizable parts of African fauna for about 4 million years.
To a point, Deinotherium and Indricotherium Of the Many Names didn't live in cold climates and the second in particular was as big as a medium sized sauropod. Does appear the maximum extreme of mammal size. The first co-existed with the earliest human ancestors.
Mammals don’t have that and so we can’t get that big unless we’re swimming in cold water, like the whales. Or we live in cold climates, like [insert list of megafauna that went extinct the minute humans showed up in their environment].

Other than the working deinotherium, there tiny lophialetes - ancient tapirs trying really, really hard to be teeny tiny ponies - run in herds. Tukhé folk keep them as pets, their hooves tippy-tapping through the longhouse. 3/4

Life in the banyans is 3-dimensional, lived in a solid, walkable canopy. On the ground floor is where maosa tend large animals like deinotherium, which they trade with other groups. Here is where domestication arose in a unique event, through the hands of a singular person - Sha'all. 4/4
