Years ago I gave my kid a copy of THE CATS OF TANGLEWOOD FOREST by Charles DeLint and they read it in a day and loved it. What I didn’t know is that they STILL HAVE IT and they’re reading it again now and I’m like awwww I gave you a comfort read awwww

Honestly: I highly recommend people read either Pratchet of DeLint instead.

Probably Moonheart, by Charles DeLint. A modern (at the time) portal fantasy, but with fantastic elements in the real world, too. Strong friendships, interesting puzzles, place as a character. Lots of people jumped on the urban fantasy Celt train, but DeLint did it early and better than many.

I do read some YA, & they are one of the worst examples of the genre.
I would much sooner give kids a Holly Black or Lemony Snicket book, or Pratchet & DeLint for older kids.
