Sometimes scientific phrases just speak to me. I'm reading a paper on raccoon densities and saw "We captured 404 unique raccoons" and now i can't stop thinking about the study to the tune of "99 red balloons"

Raccoon densities were higher in bottomland hardwoods compared to riparian forests, isolated wetlands, and upland pines. Densities in these land cover types were relatively low, likely because of min...

OKAY EEK I was really busy on Wednesday and fell behind. Wednesday's #Nudivember is Pleurobranchus peronii! The most vibrant pillow! I want to rest my head on its soft little body!

A national vote is a national vote. Where densities lie shouldn't matter.

Also it was initially enacted to give slaveholders more power.

Man I would love to know which parts of the city are still outstanding, but if it's the areas with the highest population densities as it tends to be, there is zero chance of Karen Bass winning all of them.

New preprint 🧬 Methanogen genomes carry an overlooked source of genetic variation: tandem repeats, at densities >30× the prokaryotic average, on par with the Borg elements where I first saw them. Led by PhD student @sebastianhaiss.bsky.social at ETH Zürich.

this goes for a lot of countries with 'spiky' population densities, not just usamerica. we've seen canadians make the same misunderstandings.

404 unique raccoons
Tagged in summer's evening gloom
Some ate trash and some soft mast
But which should we give a vaccine cache?
To stop the ones who spread rabies
We need to know their densities
Some are bold and some are shy
With 404 unique raccoons we'll try

A post-auto future is possible for US cities, we just have to allow the densities necessary to sustain it.

That may be an aspect, but certainly over here it is about the complete transformation of ecosystems for livestock farming. Fertilisers, sowing of productive plants, high sticking densities, etc

It's technically easy to depict actual % of votes with shades from red through purple to blue. It's also pretty easy to depict differences in population density, either by using transparencies or different densities of dots. (Of course none of that works for everyone with color blindness)

This is good enough that it tightens up our understanding of the dense matter equation of state even more! We are homing in on what particles can get up to when they are crushed together at supranuclear densities.

while I was working on this I thought that it might be a nice addition. there are so many trees in London that it's hard to make out densities with markers. I'd upvote this feature request 😅

Inversion tillage reduced spider density and richness throughout the following growing season, while soil mesofauna densities, carabid taxonomic diversity and functional composition recovered by spring 🌾 🕷️ 🍂

Z2RAM: SRAM speed, DRAM density on-chip 🏎️

Nagare Labs, backed by Pat Gelsinger, `reports` its Z2RAM offers SRAM speeds at DRAM densities, with a cell retaining data for over 300 seconds at 85°C.

This could alleviate AI chip memory bottlenecks, assuming the thermal envelope can scale up.

Yeah. Them electrons all have the same weight, don't mix well with protons, no need to separate out the water, sulphur, distill into different densities. Also rarely coming as quarks, so no need to reform into heavier stuff.

*Terrific.*

"Comparison with recent electron-beam heating models indicates that reproducing the thermal inversion in W1935 [...].

We find that Joule heating would require a strong magnetic field and large electron densities, the latter supported by external ionization from an unidentified source."
Thanks to #JWST, astronomers have detected infrared emission from methane on W1935, a brown dwarf located 47 ly away which is cold and lacks a host star.

This unexpected result suggests atmospheric heating by auroral processes.

MICR E-13B font was designed to be printed with magnetic ink, and the original equipment didn’t use OCR; rather, it distinguished the characters by their magnetic densities (each character uses a different amount of ink and therefore results in a unique magnetic waveform)

How obscure this is in USA
Clearly GOP voter suppression at work
Polling places should be massively expanded
They should be allocated by voter densities
November 1, 2026 at 10:35 PM
I don't think they can

Sperm whales make clicks at 230 dB, but because of the difference in densities between the air and water, what 230 dB is in water is ~168 dB in air, which causes hearing damage but is not lethal to a human when the sound travels through the air
