In a 1992 issue of Nintendo Power, several years before Ocarina, there is a Zelda comic where Link is depicted with a fairy companion who is drawn as a glowing orb with wings, but when they zoom in on her she has a full humanoid body. I think it's safe to say this was a known artistic shorthand.
