I don't think it helps the debate about what Democrats should do to pick an obscure thing that some Democrat somewhere may have said -- like on teaching eighth grade algebra -- and then attribute it to Democrats generally.

I think we are agreeing because what I'm saying is that we need to study detracking itself more rigorously in light of the studies that already exist about tracking.

But the caveat is this: the teachers who chose to teach the untracked classes got extra training, and they used inquiry-based methods. That's also the problem with the Railside study. When a study mixes detracking with inquiry learning and better teacher training, can you conclude detracking works?

I think he's talking about Newsom supporting the creation of CA math curriculum standards. Which is a massive stretch, since its one subject area, what he promoted was having state guidelines at all, and the current standards don't even require detracking (they do sort of encourage it).

One thing I do for @accessdetracktrack.bsky.social is organize a visit to a detracking school at annual meeting. It’s disturbing how many people are having to cancel last minute because they don’t feel safe traveling to the US or their US-based institution can’t/won’t pay for travel after all.
