Honestly, a Valve style video walkthrough of compiling the engine from source would be fantastic. And if it's too complex of a process to fit in a concise video, maybe the build pipeline/process should be simplified or a "first time setup" script created (IIRC devkitpro does this)

Peggle (2026) by Enarkz for Game Boy Advance.

A small GBA port built in C++ with Devkitpro. Extended and procedural modes, plus original level layouts rather than a 1:1 remake. Characters, powers and worlds come straight from the source.

So, as I currently understand it: the script MUST BE run from the MSYS2 program included with DevKitPro. There, it will actually attempt a compile, only to be thwarted by this Pimpmobile nonsense. I'm not even being cute here; that's literally what they called it.

Progress. Sort of. Now it's yelping about some DevKitPro dependency, which... uh, should be right where it needs to be, homey. I have DevKitPro, I absolutely do, and I'm pretty sure I got the full suite of utilities.

look at devkitpro for the wii for example,
it is POORLY documented
it makes sense why one would pivot to AI at that point
however, i think an actually good solution to all of this is just people putting in effort to write GOOD DOCUMENTATION

we really should make an alternative to devkitPro for every "modern" Nintendo console

I think the best way to ease into ereader dev is first do gba dev using DevKitPro (there are many tutorials/videos for that, I used the tonc tutorial at gbadev.net/tonc/intro.h... myself).

Once you've got some gba stuff working, get the example project from here working: github.com/AkBKukU/e-re...

I don’t think devkitpro handled the situation particularly well, but nethertheless it is resolved now. HBC had already not gotten a new release since 2012, so marcan archiving the repository didn’t do anything other than start drama.

C++ runs on many BE systems (N64 with libdragon, GCN, Wii, Wii U with devkitPro). You can achieve memory safety with smart pointers (shared or unique ownership) and RAII (letting lifetime handle allocations.
If you target less niche platforms you might have a look at Rust, Zig or C3

Not only time for me to dust off GBDK/PSXNoob/SGDK/DevKitPro, but probably also to see about finding an Assembly course
what do you mean the new 8 bit cuphead game is being programmed in assembly for the sega master system??? thats fucking crazy. a brand new sega master system game was announced at the summer game fest 2026

i had devkitpro and ds game maker setup before switching to linux but really need to see if i can get it to work with my current setup

the bit ive dealt with it by proxy has been a lot of fun yea!

my biggest annoyance getting into this stuff directly is that devkitpro is basically purely distributed as pacman packages or docker dev containers and neither are particularly attractive to me ... but still. would be fun heh

devkitPro is the project that makes devkitPPC and libogc 🤓☝️

but yes, they stupidly require pacman, but you can just install pacman on any other (non-immutable) distro and it works fine. they rely on macOS and Windows builds of pacman too it's kinda silly

it's been like this ~forever

@CursedSilicon @invoxiplaygames.uk @squibbus.gay wait. If you're just talking about devkitpro then what the heck are you doing because yhey have *always* supported other distros

Let's add the GameCube and the Wii to the party! 🎉

This time, thanks to devkitPro.

straightforward process using wut from devkitPro, with the only platform-specific details I had to deal with being in IXWebSocket where wut doesn't have Unix pipes and is missing <netinet/ip.h>, but those problems were able to be easily solved (see alt text for details)
