Aside from the fact even a full $100 will do diddly squat (unless it's monthly instead of 1 time), why is Checks in quotes both times? Are they supposed to be theoretical or does he think checks is a new/unfamiliar word like groceries?

um.. medicare B costs over $300 a month. I know this because mine got cancelled because I couldn't pay it for several months. "nearly $100" won't do diddly for us seniors to pay for medicare.

the job market is straight up ass! And my 6 years of professional animation exp means diddly squat to corporate office gigs. Too overqualified for retail w/ 10yrs exp. I’m just scraping by making/selling art. Prob won’t ever retire or be a homeowner 🙃 I’m tired 🫂

I do remember working at WH Smith in 93 or so and the head of the “sounds” dept and her bf being absolute Rock Club types who dug hair metal and were RAGING about alt-rock. & a colleague came into the staffroom once while I had Meat Puppets on the stereo and she said, “uh oh - widdly diddly music!”
