#Australia is building the biggest virtual power plant on Earth — connecting hundreds of thousands of home #batteries and rooftop #solar systems into a single coordinated grid asset worth gigawatts of clean dispatchable power. #ActOnClimate #Renewables

When the former Government ran the energy system, 4 gigawatts (a lot) of reliable, dispatchable energy left the grid

Since we came to office, 4 gigawatts of reliable, dispatchable energy has come online

Let’s keep going 🔥

“Solar is no longer just cheap daytime electricity, now it’s anytime dispatchable electricity,” said Rangelova. “This is a game-changer for countries with fast-growing demand and strong solar resources.”
This is incredible (good news too): “After a 40% fall in 2024 in battery equipment costs, it’s clear we’re on track for another major fall in 2025…The economics for batteries are unrecognizable, & the industry is only just getting to grips with this new paradigm”

Batteries now cheap enough to make dispatchable solar economically feasible
Energy think tank Ember says utility-scale battery costs have fallen to $65/MWh outside China and the United States, enabling solar power to be delivered when needed.

Battery is such a game-changer, and nowhere is that more obvious than in California:

2019: daytime solar☀️
2025: dispatchable solar☀️☀️☀️

Make sure your loved ones aren't operating on out of date priors about intermittent renewables: tell them batteries are now an economical supplement generating full time dispatchable power from them.

Important analysis here from Ember. Compare dispatchable solar at $76/MWh (given these assumptions) to the most recent LCOE numbers from Lazard. At these price points, it's game over for thermal generation. (NB: combined cycle gas isn't particularly dispatchable)

Advanced geothermal is my new favorite baseload generation option. It's zero emission, widely deployable, uses existing expertise and employment from the US oil & gas sector, has negligible technology risk, and is fully dispatchable. Tons of reasons to be optimistic on it.

Solar+batteries is just going to win.

Solar is comparatively cheap. It's the easiest for power companies to deploy (~1 year vs. 5-10 years for conventional power plants). It's inexpensive to maintain. It's environmentally beneficial. And it can add value to farms by providing shade.

It's a winner

10. I could go on. But the bottom line is that just because you just learned about the difference between baseload, peaking, dispatchable and non-dispatchable resources doesn't mean that we need a new law about it. *sigh* /fin

The argument for gas peaker plants is rapidly vanishing

In Australia, dependence on gas generation during evening energy peak has fallen by ~70%

Batteries now meet almost half of the grid’s dispatchable power needs during hours of highest demand

.. requires new data centres to develop on-site dispatchable power generation capacity or storage - unless GHG emissions are regulated, this means more fossil fuels.

I feel dismayed - we're going backwards.

NEW | As batteries become cheaper and more efficient, costs to store daytime solar are plummeting.

Outside China and the US, it now only costs an additional $33/MWh to transform daytime solar into dispatchable nighttime energy 🔋

This is my favourite graphic.

It's incredible how far DAYTIME solar has already come with almost no batteries.

Just think how this will change with batteries, when instead of daytime solar, we get DISPATCHABLE solar.

The solar boom is only just starting...

It's as messy a phrase as 'renewable'. Granholm sort of means 'dispatchable', narrowly 'responds to set points above current generation'.

The conservative MP meant "any fossil fuel power station"

A new battery record in ERCOT! 5,970 megawatts. Beat the old one by nearly 400 megawatts. This is great for the Texas grid & for consumers. It's a fully dispatchable, flexible resource ready to go during times of scarcity. Batteries are changing the grid for the better.

Remember when folks argued the government was subsidizing renewable energy rather than letting the market decide? This is literally a gas plant subsidy!

The scheme would incentivize new gas and other “dispatchable” generation at the expense of renewables and batteries, which constitute the vast majority of recent capacity additions in ERCOT.

Chile and Australia are entering the next phase of solar ☀️🔋

Battery buildout is now so strong that new solar isn’t adding to the midday glut anymore, it’s being shifted into morning and evening demand.

This isn’t just more solar. This is solar becoming dispatchable. #Bettrification

"The trend is clear: while the cost of dispatchable renewable energy systems continues to decline through innovation, the cost of fossil-based generation is expected to increase — a divergence that is likely to become even more pronounced in the coming years."
The idea that India will import expensive LNG to replace coal power is not one based in reality.

And it's because of simple economics that we know this.

Renewables are cheaper than coal. And coal is much cheaper than LNG.

Do the math.
India's coal utilisation is set to decline as renewables increasingly meet power demand.

MORE THAN A THIRD of India’s coal assets will run below 40% utilisation by 2032. Expensive plants running above INR 3/kWh risks becoming underutilised or going idle.
