A Greener Grid: Florida Facility Turning Hydrogen into Power
The DeBary Hydrogen Production Storage System, part of the DeBary power plant complex, is the first in the U.S. to produce, store, and burn 100% green hydrogen for power generation. The power generation sector continues to debate the importance of hydrogen to the energy sector. There’s agreement, though, on the use of hydrogen in support of decarbonization, and how hydrogen produced using excess renewable energy can be used for carbon-free, dispatchable generation capacity. The DeBary Hydrogen Production Storage System project in Volusia County, Florida, is a model for this technology, and has been recognized with a POWER Top Plant Award for hydrogen. Duke Energy Florida and GE Vernova have moved hydrogen from concept and pilot scale into real‑world grid operations, with DeBary recognized as a first‑of‑its‑kind achievement for the U.S. power sector: the nation’s first end‑to‑end system capable of producing, storing, and combusting 100% green hydrogen for commercial peaking power generation. The hydrogen project is sited alongside the 692-MW DeBary natural gas–fired power plant, and 74.5-MW solar farm, with the combined complex spread across an area covering the equivalent of almost 200 football fields. The hydrogen production facility, which began commercial operation in January of this year, features a fully...

The Senate Energy Committee hears the GRID Power Act Wednesday—it would let FERC fast-track grid hookups for always-on plants like gas, coal, and nuclear, ahead of others waiting in line. Data centers are driving a surge in electricity demand, and this bill decides who gets connected first.
S465 U.S. Senate: GRID Power Act Guaranteeing Reliability… (Introduced)
GRID Power Act aims to enhance grid reliability by prioritizing dispatchable power projects.

AI data centers once pulled megawatts during peaks while backup batteries sat idle. New designs discharge those same batteries in real time to stabilize frequency and voltage, turning reliability hardware into a dispatchable grid asset via software alone.

Dispatchable generation is 20th century fossil fuel thinking; dispatchable load will be a much better fit for the 21st century. Instead of One Big Data Center, put large numbers of small data centers near solar and wind power under interruptible contracts that allow usage to follow wind and sun.

That is the physics. Grid frequency is held by rotating inertia and dispatchable output, and a reactor supplies both continuously through any weather or season. Sweden, France and Ontario all run deeply decarbonised grids built on exactly that foundation

Batteries met 49% of the grid’s dispatchable power needs during the evening in August 2026, up from 0.4% in 2020.
In contrast, gas fell from 65.9% to 20.6% over the same period.
This piece shows the influx of batteries in the last year means Australia's reliance on gas has dropped by almost 70% at peak times.

We don't need more gas. We need to save Scott Reef from Woodside's gas drilling and stop fracking in the NT's Beetaloo Basin.

Does this mean that each of the 3 units gets about 65 A of "non dispatchable" loads, with normal breakers?

For the major kitchen appliances (fridge, stove, oven, dishwasher), my Vancouver townhouse uses I think 3×15A breakers and one 20A.

How do you have enough room for appliances in each unit?

Zeo Energy Enters Cooperation Agreement with Ewyze to Develop Integrated Off-Grid Power and Data-Center Infrastructure
Zeo Energy (ZEO)/b) has entered a cooperation agreement with Ewyze to develop integrated off-grid power and data-center infrastructure targeting AI-driven demand. The partners plan to focus primarily on the United States, with selected international markets where conditions are favourable. Ewyze brings an integrated model that co-develops data centers with dedicated off-grid microgrids combining solar photovoltaic generation, battery energy storage and a dispatchable power source, which may include a grid connection, natural gas or geothermal power, to deliver reliable 24/7 capacity. The approach is designed to reduce dependence on lengthy utility interconnection timelines and, where market, land, permitting, financing and technical conditions allow, aims to bring data-center capacity online in approximately two to three years from project initiation. The companies intend to collaborate across site selection, permitting, engineering, construction, financing and project commercialisation with data-centre operators and hyperscale customers.

How Sembcorp Is Aiming To Boost Its BESS, RTC and FDRE Pipeline With New IPO Plan?
After the entry of several renewable energy companies into the Indian stock market, more renewable Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are now looking to jump onto the bandwagon. The latest entrant is Singapore-based Sembcorp’s Indian renewable energy arm, Sembcorp Green Infra. The company has proposed a ₹3,750-crore IPO at a time when it is expanding beyond conventional wind and solar projects into battery energy storage systems (BESS), round-the-clock (RTC) power, and firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) projects. Sembcorp Green Infra is preparing to tap the public markets with a ₹3,750-crore initial public offering, but the company's proposed use of the proceeds suggests that the issue is as much about strengthening its balance sheet as it is about supporting its next phase of growth. The proposed issue is entirely a fresh issue of equity shares. There is no offer-for-sale component. Of the proceeds, ₹3,000 crore is proposed to be used for repayment or prepayment of certain borrowings of the company and its subsidiaries, with the balance earmarked for general corporate purposes. The draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) was filed with SEBI in September. In the latest move, SEBI has now asked the company to furnish more details towards the issue, a...

They’re cheaper under a certain penetration rate. The costs rise when trying to power the whole system on wind and solar + storage. So a certain amount of dispatchable is needed *as well*.
September 21, 2026 at 10:42 AM
Yes they do? Can’t have renewables without grid upgrades, additional storage and future dispatchable baseload back up 24/7, 365 power. Much better to use a bit more gas in transition to reduce those costs and displace much less efficient oil and gas combustion for transport and heating energy.

You have to have the rampable capacity held in reserve.
The hydro / nuclear capacity will be serving their own slices of the demand stack, not as backstop reserves. (Our hydro is mostly RoR and has limited dispatchable capabaility, and acts as ~4GW non-disptchable supply and ~2GW of 12hr storage.)
September 16, 2026 at 6:39 PM
We do need dispatchable demand. The problem is most industrial processes want to run 24-7.

But doing useful work with excess supply would be useful.
