Whole categories of toil have been simply abolished. You have never seen a distaff outside of a museum. You have almost certainly never had to carry water from a source to a house.

Distaff spinning. Combed wool from my Dorset X Tunis ewe, Lester. The distaff and spindle are part of the trove we recently aquired. It's Balkan I think. The band securing the combed wool is from Bulgaria.

This Portland fibre has been on my Oseberg distaff for some time. I use it at workshops to demonstrate spinning with a short distaff, but it’s beginning to look a little travel weary, so it needs to be finished off.

It's hilarious, to me, that "distaff" in the sense of "female" indeed comes, whoosh, directly from the distaff used in wool spinning, which is women's work, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars.

7 Jan is St Distaff Day or Rock Day, when women returned to spinning after Christmas. There was no saint, it was a jocular name; distaff and rock are the staff for drawing flax. Reedmace, likened to a distaff, was ‘Cuigeal nam ban-sìthe’ in Gaelic, meaning ‘staff of fairy women’.
