Thrilled to see our paper finally out. We've shown parallels between the network geometries of distributary and tributary river systems, but also where the parallel breakdown to apparent transitions in process dominance.

In a global assessment of global river deltas, researchers uncovered a scaling relationship between channel length and land-building extent that echoes the so-called “Hack’s law” in river networks.

One huge distributary in North America is the Atchafalaya River, a distributary of the Mississippi that's been controlled by the Old River Control Structure since 1963 so it won't steal the entire Mississippi River flow (it takes about 30% now). It's also a distributary for the Red River!

This formation preserves the calm ponds and distributary channels of a delta that emptied into the Western Interior Seaway. There is no evidence of mangroves so I like to compare it with the Danube delta.

My grandmother’s house overlooking the Hooghly river (a distributary of the Ganges). The river significantly shaped the colonial history of Bengal. At peak colonial activity, the Hooghly had at least five European presences: British, French, Dutch, Danish, Portuguese.
