In spite of the daily deluge of devastating news about science/the world, I’m excited to preprint some of my postdoc work (supported by an IRACDA grant-now terminated). Probing PBP1 function we uncovered unexpected features of the #Cdif #divisome 😄 We think it’s divisome could be a great drug target

New preprint! Cell division has to happen at the right place but how Archaea pick that place is unknown. We now identified a three-protein system, Dip, that positions the divisome at midcell in H. volcanii and is broadly conserved across Archaea. A thread 🧵

Very interesting paper on structural biology and biochemistry of Staph aureus FtsW:PBP1 (PBP1 is the divisome bPBP partner). Amongst other things, looks like some very interesting results on interaction of PBP1 PASTA domains with peptidoglycan pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... #MicroSky

We explore the differences in the early divisome between E. coli and current proteobacterial systems and argue that core functions and not core genes are generally conserved. In fact, using gene conservation and essentiality is problematic and may distort our understanding.

My first story about Archaea cell division comes out !!! A three protein system (Dip system) positions H. volcanii divisome to midcell. Dip system works like bacterial Min sytem, but they share NO sequence homology "All roads lead to Rome😊".

Minimization of the Bacillus subtilis divisome suggests FtsZ and SepF can form an active Z-ring, and reveals the amino acid transporter BraB as a new cell division influencing factor
Author summary One of the key aims of synthetic biology is the construction of a minimal cell. Since bacteria are the simplest life forms, they are the preferred blueprint for such a cell. However, a ...

Here, we show the importance of septal fortification by the Class A Penicillin Binding Protein, PBP1b, in E. coli and provide a molecular mechanism for this function. (1/12).
The aPBP-type cell wall synthase PBP1b plays a specialized role in fortifying the Escherichia coli division site against osmotic rupture
A multi-protein system called the divisome promotes bacterial division. This apparatus synthesizes the peptidoglycan (PG) cell wall layer that forms the daughter cell poles and protects them from osmo...
