I'm 61, & it certainly was a thing here in Scotland when I was a bairn.
We had fancy dress, guising, not t or t dooking for apples, jammy doughnuts.
But it was only for those under ten, no adults or older weans participated in it at all.

Thinking of Mariah Carey before dooking for apples just doesn't seem right 🤔

UK: wait till they've finished Guy Fawkes bonfires, toffee apples and fireworks.
Dooking for apples on Halloween doesn't count. (Not sure if you have apple-dooking)

Had such an amazing day with my special little people yesterday 🎃✨
We packed the day with Halloween STEM, dooking for apples, and pumpkin art, then finished it all off with a silent disco and party! 🕺🍎🎨
Video to follow! 🎥

🎃👻 Halloween fun and learning in P1 today!

We had a spooktacular day filled with lots of fun activities. We explored gloopy pumpkins, enjoyed Halloween mark making and sticking, went dooking for apples, played Halloween games on the SMART Board, recapped our phonics and sorted shapes! 🧡🕷️

I grew up in Cullercoats and it wasn’t a big thing there - just dooking for apples at home. Penny for the guy was much the bigger thing

Superb! I seem to have blocked out guising etc, can’t remember anything I dressed up as, maybe I didn’t, I was a painfully shy kid. Do remember neep lanterns and dooking for apples tho

Our rainbow room children had so much Halloween fun on Friday, icing ghost biscuits and dooking for apples

This week, the under 3’s team participated in lots of Halloween fun! We explored pumpkins, messy play and created spooky pictures 🎃 We baked cupcakes and enjoyed them for a party snack, with Halloween music and dancing 🎵👻 Some children even took part in dooking for apples! 🍎

On Friday, we learned about traditional Scottish Halloween customs. We had lots of fun in the afternoon dooking for apples! 🎃👻

🔥Oidhche Shamhna Shona Dhuibh & Happy Hallaeen/Halloween if you’re celebrating! Here are some vintage photos of guisers (who would have had to do their turn before getting anything) & dooking for apples at a Halloween party 🍎 Enjoy whatever you’re doing ☺️!

Is it true that Mephitidae's (skunks) make a dooking sound like mustelids such as ferrets or kolonoks?

Only the ones who had their kids dooking for chips 😉

I heard the kids go past at back of 5 I think?

When I was a kid in the 80s I remember dooking for apples. I still think turnip carving is better than pumpkin carving; pumpkins are too precise, whereas the tougher turnips give more grotesque results

Yes, Halloween has become a much bigger occasion than it used to be but does it have to be celebrated in the American traditional way? What happened to guiding, dooking and tumpshie lanterns? I long to hear children say "please to help you guisers" instead of "trick or treat". 👻

Same here! We always had turnips - I don't think those big orange things were even a Thing in Scotland in the early 70s.
Mind you, we only did the turnips and dooking for apples. Might've made toffee apples.

None of that demanding money with menaces that the Americans are so keen on.
