#tombTuesday you say? Hard to beat my first ever visit to Newgrange, Knowth and a freshly excavated passage tomb in Dowth yesterday courtesy of the wonderful folk in the Irish national archaeology team and Department of works.

Speaking of #AcademicCommunication, I believe it was a mistake for Dr. Elizabeth Shee Twohig & the #RoyalIrishAcademy to ignore my #communications to the effect that it's a mistake to assert that Ireland's #MegalithicArt is geometric #NonRepresentationalArt that "cannot be understood".

A Facebook comment from the fall of 2021 responding to this 'Excavations At Knowth' post: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18mMchDABB/ in which I call into question Irish archaeologist Dr. Elizabeth Shee Twohig's assertion that the megalithic art of Knowth is purely geometric "non-representational art" that "cannot be understood": I am quite concerned by Elizabeth Shee Twohig claiming that because "the carvings are geometric, we can't decipher them with any certainty", and "but we can appreciate the achievement of the artists and builders of Knowth 5000 years ago, even if we cannot understand the art." Her suggestion that "perhaps its symbolism was a secret, even in its own time, except for certain people" only deepens the "mystery". Thankfully Ms. Twohig does acknowledge, "The fact that the people who built the "passage tombs" had an interest in astronomical alignments might suggest that some of the art is related to this, such as the radial representing the sun perhaps." Perhaps? Isn't it glaringly obvious that the "radial lines" around circles and rings are rayed sun symbols? Cut While I cannot claim to completely and definitively "decipher" ALL of the rock art at Knowth, Newgrange, Dowth, Loughcrew, Fourknocks and other Irish megalithic sites, I can assert with a high degree of certainty that the circles, rings, or holes with "radial lines" carved into Dowth's "Stone of the Seven Suns", Loughcrew's "Equinox Stone", and Knowth's inner passage housing its stone basin do in fact represent the sun. More specifically, these rayed sun symbols are almost certainly inspired by prehistoric observations of one or more of the three total solar eclipses that occurred above 4th millennium BCE Ireland. It is both interesting and alarming to see how much the tourism board is the ultimate arbiter of heritage in Ireland, be it archaeological heritage or museums. While tourism is obviously financially valuable there are other forms of value that are equally important www.rte.ie/news/regiona...

Old photographs of #TotalSolarEclipses tend to show only the bright inner corona, & thus don't accurately depict what is seen during #totality.

The black disk of the Moon surrounded by the rays & streamers of the Sun's corona looks like the disembodied pupil & iris of an "eye in the sky".

The flip side of that coin is prominent #archaeologists stubbornly refusing to give the slightest consideration to very credible hypotheses brought to their attention by "amateurs" that actually are supported by evidence of one kind or another; especially if they conflict with their own hypotheses.
A scientific astronomical drawing of the 1851 total solar eclipse of the left compares very well with a photo of one of the "radial line motif" petroglyphs carved into Dowth's "Stone of the Seven Suns". The "radial line motif" can be readily understood to be a rayed Sun symbol, but it can be even better understood to be a quite accurate depiction of a darkened Moon surrounded by the Sun's corona during a total solar eclipse. The caption to the photo of the Dowth petroglyph says: "Either the sun or an eye may be signified in this carving on a curbstone of a retaining wall that was built to protect the base of a burial mound at Dowth, County Meath, Ireland."

My #Eclipsology research finds circumstantial evidence which suggests that #prehistoric people transposed beliefs about death & rebirth inspired by #TotalSolarEclipses onto the less awe-inspiring, but annual & easily predictable, "death" & "rebirth" of the Sun during the #WinterSolstice.

We got free entry to Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre: Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth because Heritage Ireland have a deal with English Heritage. It unexpectedly saved us a lot when we spotted a small sign on the till. (You have to book online now so it's more obvious.)

It won its name when King #Bresal commanded all the men of Ireland to build him a tower tall enough to reach the sky. A disease had afflicted all of Ireland’s cattle leaving only seven cows alive. It seemed that Bresal was looking to the sky to find an answer for this serious problem. His sister, who was a druid, secretly stopped the sun in the sky so that the tower could be built in a single day. As the men continued working, they became exhausted. However, the spell was broken when Bresal and his sister committed incest. It is thought that Dowth could therefore be linked with the constellation of Taurus, which contains a group of stars called Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters. These seven suns/sisters are thought to represent #Bresal’s seven surviving cows.“
