#dpad
The sticks are tensionable and replaceable with other sticks it came with.

It has detachable paddles of different lengths for four inner buttons plus buttons for extra input.

It has three trigger stop depths, rubberized handles, and metal pieces on the controller.

You can swap out the dpad

I've always felt that Mario 64 DS should've held off and been a 3DS game, because my GOD that game controls like balls with a Dpad.

It seems to perhaps be two paths that diverge from the playstation snes project that fell through..... like ps1 controller clearly takes inspiration from the snes one. But I think n64 is them trying to keep the old snes layout in some way with the dpad as well while putting the analog stick on

It's very funny to consider the differences between the two controllers now. Ps1 is just "basically a snes controller but with two more shoulder buttons" and then n64 is like the epitome of "throw stuff at the wall to see what works". Analog stick in a weird spot. C-buttons. Separate dpad handle

i finally found an original duke controller at a thrift store and ougfgh my god this controller is comfortable
the egg buttons look weird but they serve a purpose, i can easily press them all without misspresses or moving my thumb. the dpad looks stupid, but your thumb just fucking stays in there

tank controls on a stick instead of a dpad is kinda weird but this is great actually
the n64 controllers I got off neokyo are good enough to play re2 without replacing any parts

I wish gunmetal gothic played like its aesthetic inspirations. these visuals with modern controls just makes me yearn for gungage. tank controls, dpad only, generous auto aim, and a powerful sidestep you need to manipulate for any real maneuvering. I'm sure I'm the only person who feels this way.

The dpad and the left stick are in the wrong spot on the steam controller

My PC can run control and I'm in love no other has me hyped to find a taxi or question myself how to climb the floor.
Biggest issue to me is that I can't change weapons mid fight (seemlessly) and not being able to use all finishers at once.

Had they added dpad to change weapons and commands for

The real sin of Samus Returns is that movement is on the control stick not on the dpad
September 28, 2026 at 9:27 PM
one of the dpad buttons seems to only get used for closing tutorial prompts, legitimately
September 28, 2026 at 7:04 PM
it's not like, *terrible*, like i said it's the same dpad the deck has with the same problem, so if you've used one of those you get the idea. it's generally serviceable but very prone to false diagonals which in some games can be very punishing to the point you might grab a different controller.

I'm glad they scrapped exam-c for t&r honestly. excursion/fluctuation was bad enough, though on the bright side it made me realize I'm way better with dpad/arrows than with a stick
September 28, 2026 at 6:10 PM
i have a friend who swears by it. Insane guy. The new steam controller however is the best controller I've ever used and the only problem is valve didn't listen to feedback on the deck so it has the same shitty dpad as the deck does
September 28, 2026 at 6:06 PM
i just remembered that you can fully operate the menus and combat with only the DPAD purposefully so you can grind with one hand while you do other things. god tier

we're hitting the same issue I have with Lost Judgement where I love the game to bits but I'm constantly getting distracted by how unused the dpad is and wondering why
September 28, 2026 at 4:28 AM
legitimotely i never really understood the issue people have with either the switch 1 or 2 pro controllers. like in theory i get it but in practice it has never affected me. and i do use the dpad a lot
September 28, 2026 at 2:29 AM
dualsense hatred is completely warranted, the dpad feels like it was made for a glass top coffee table and not using it in any game made for human beings
September 27, 2026 at 11:17 PM
doing KBDC in Tekken is much, much more difficult on a Dualsense than it is a DS4 because of that damn dpad
September 27, 2026 at 11:07 PM
the DualSense is fine, I just hate the dpad and the buttons don't feel as good, also i prefer the shape of the DS4
September 27, 2026 at 11:04 PM
i was not a fan of the limp whip mechanic. Maybe it worked bette with an original controller with a good dpad
September 27, 2026 at 9:58 PM
It definitely gets more interesting with the buff management later. Is the combat as deep as I wish it was? No, but the movement along with the hyper aggressive enemies makes it feel fresh.
I wish we could just set different weapons to the dpad or something instead of loadouts though.
September 27, 2026 at 2:53 PM
I understand the N64 design philosophy of not mapping anything to the dpad if the stick is in use but honestly it still feels pretty nice for just switching forms once in a while
