Join me @ writing.kyakali.com
It reads: World Building Journal Entry Twenty-Three Do you have a character who casts ritual spells? What does that look like? What are their tools? Caraxxus the wizard often carries a small vial of gold paint, chalk, charcoal, and carved stones. Many of his spells require a spell circle. These are carefully painted into geometric shapes along with any materials the spell might need. Sometimes a bit of fabric, sometimes herbs, sometimes powders of various minerals. Then, with a distant look, the circle will blaze to light and any number of wondrous things may come to pass. He is a water-elemental touched person from the sea, operating on land. His spells are precise on land, but flowy and quick underwater. Salene, a wizard of a different discipline, follows the same basic approach, though her circles have a more curled and flowy lines. She is an elf who has always casted her spells on land, but her sense of freedom comes from being aligned with air. Din'za, the orc shaman of Power, draws rough circles, a little unbalanced, when she reaches into the world and calls forth her spells. Zahra, shaman of dark and profane magic, uses exclusively unbalanced runes and circles that change the flow of magic in unnatural ways, mutating spells an enchantments from one thing into something else entirely. It reads: World Building Journal Entry Twenty-Two A character has someone (perhaps a parent) who has always believed in them and supported them. When they send a raven with a request, what does it say? Yed'lay was surprised when a raven landed on her shoulder. The orc tensed, the little claws scratched through her shirt on her skin. It shrieked in her ear and danced insistently on her shoulder. "What is it?" she asked, her ear ringing slightly. Its answer was to shriek again, and she reached up, brushing something... paper? After a little wrestling, she managed to get the paper free; the bird pecked at her hand and flew off to a nearby branch and cawed at her aggressively. "Listen here, you came over to me with all your complaints." The unimpressed avian squawked at her again. She scowled at it and showed off her tusks. It was no more impressed. She unrolled the parchment. My dearest daughter, Fir'loc does not believe this will reach you. I sent a little present, can you wear it when you come to visit, and he will see the ravens are clever? Please feed it before letting it come back tomorrow. Cat'rin. Enclosed was a carefully woven strip of fabric with carved bone charms.

It reads: Worldbuilding Entry Twenty-One Entry Twenty-One The character has fought bitterly through a battle (or a dungeon), and is face to face with the cause of this fight. What could that person offer them that would tempt your character to give up on their cause? This one is a bit of a tough prompt for me. The way that I write, usually by the time characters are battling or this opposed to each other, there's really no going back because it would be at the expense of too much. However~! Dahlia was denied her birthright by both parents, and so several of her more violent acts are in pursuit of a place in which she belongs. Were she to be offered such a place to her satisfaction, it is possible that this particular hard-headed personality would turn all her fluffy tails and leave the battlefield. Otherwise, if she believes she needs to defend herself from the people facing her, or she sees them as obstacles, she will use her unique magical abilities to try to kill anyone she can touch. Her magic is very corrosive, both on herself, but most of all those she uses it on (usually). In the world classification system, it is a type of directly profane magic, so it appears around her limbs as black mist when she uses it.

The very first date she ever went on that was the meal she shared. And now whenever she goes, she cannot help but think of that time. It reads: Worldbuilding Journal Entry Nineteen Prompt: A character has recurring nightmares - are they visions from the past or the future? When Infyraga closes her eyes. She never knows what might lay on the other side. She likes the nights that she doesn't dream at all, but plenty of nights. She dreams about things that never felt particularly resolved. Some times it was the question she had for her brother about why he knew to stay away from the University the day it blew up, and sometimes it was about calling her mother back before she could go off and never return, and yet other times it was occasions where she had fought actual monsters... Though to be fair, she was often classified as one herself. Tonight when she closed her eyes, The dream had elements from her past, she was arriving somewhere that was peculiarly empty. Open doors yawned at her like ghosts' mouths s and sometimes she thought she saw shadows in the windows, but it was impossible for anyone to be there. Wasn't it? For this space was the hallowed Halls collapsed University?... Right? No, wait... Perhaps she was staring into Irontop, or what was left of it after the orcs conquered and unabandoned it?.... No... This was outdoors? The rubble wasn't from explosions or time... It was the water. Water had risen and washed away buildings, people, a country... There was nothing here, but she'd come all this way....

Lukka tilts her head and then crouches down to get on the same level as the old elven-looking woman held out a rather murky potion. "It'll change my life, eh?" she asked, accepting the bottle. The old lady nodded. She had clear eyes, a bright smile, and nothing seemed off about her in the usual ways. However, Lukka was a gnoll, and her sensitive nose could smell the faint traces of forest on the woman, perhaps most importantly, the mushrooms. The woman was nodding. "It will let you see into the Beyond!" Lukka smiled, "Aye, I'm sure it would let me see almost anywhere I could imagine." She offered her hand to the woman to help her to her feet. It reads: World Building Journal Haha, this is a fun prompt. In the far North of Astrecia, there once stood Karenti University, a place where arctic dragons (though a few other types also made their way there) would study magic with wizards. Dragons would bond themselves to wizards using an ancient ritual stone pioneered by a dragon named Zepraga with a kobold. Dragons who bond with wizards might regard that person as their love or a close friend of the family (or there might have been complicated polyamorous relationships where a dragon has a wizard and a mate, perhaps). Wizards and dragons gain access to each other's magic and internal emotions. Both of them get the lifespan of the longest-lived person in the bond! However, a terrible accident occurred at Karenti University, and the ritual stone was buried in rubble...

Prompt: What are some real world influences on your writing?

Write your own response & tell me about yours!
It reads: Worldbuilding Journal Entry Sixteen What are some real world influences on your writing? I write a lot about feelings. In A Bunny and His Dragon, I was working through some serious burnout. Everything looked a little hopeless at the time; I was struggling to find energy to do anything, and each day at work felt like a death by a thousand cuts. I often asked myself why the corporate job that hired me for my expertise never wanted to hear what I had to say about what would be the most practical approach to the technology I was in charge of shepherding. I think it shows in the way that the characters don't fight back when it seems like they cannot win and just march on through their grief. There's sometimes just a feeling that all you need to do is keep marching until you can get to a better vantage point. It worked out for me, and the characters, but I know sometimes life isn't cooperative, and you can lose your chance to fight at all if you don't fight when it first comes up.

Prompt: Describe a curse...

Write your own response & tell me about yours!
It reads: World Building Journal Entry Fifteen Describe a curse in your world, and if there is a way to break it, how it might be broken. In the Ho'karop orc tribe, there is a legend about the darkness and light. It is said the the gods grew angry at their children when they saw some of them were wayward, so the sky was split from the earth and taken far away. But through the crack, fell beings of light and blobs of darkness. The light creatures glowed and had a beauty that is impossible to turn away from. They lure people into their embrace so that they can feed themselves. The darkness was devoured by animals, a rabbit, a badger, a possum, a bear... perhaps there maybe some other things. And the animals went mad, and began to bite whatever they came across. That darkness inflicted the shape and the twisted new identity upon whoever was bitten and lived through it. These are called the Leskan'a and are ancient evils. Only silver blades can kill them, and only gods can alleviate the curses. It shows me advertising that I changed things up. "Also! I changed up my site! I made everything but early chapters and author chatter FREE to members. Prompt: Develop an economy in your world that does not rely on precious metals.

Write your own response & tell me about yours!
It reads: The Worldbuilding Journal Entry Thirteen Develop an economy in your world that does not rely on precious metals. The Ho'karop Orcs of Irontop do not deal in money. They have always traded amongst themselves for food, clothing, services. When an orc comes of age, they must pass one of three trials - power, wisdom, or strength. Those that pass the power trial become shamans and do magical chores for the tribe. Those that pass the wisdom trial are often craftsmen, tanning leather, repairing houses, carving wood, and doing other hand-based tasks. Those that pass the strength trials go on to be hunters of monsters, game, and anything else an orc can eat. And many of those are raiders, who attack merchant caravans attempting to make the trek from Hyton to Redhearst. When orcs are killed, the next time they raid, they bring that many captives back to their mountain to work. They do not trade with humans or elves; seeing each other is cause for an immediate fight, so the orcs have no use for money, and their economy is based on what they can forage, make, or steal.

It reads World Building Journal Entry 12 If your world could open a gate to a place of greater technology for just a few seconds, what would it try to grab? What would that cause to change? A character dubbed "The Mad Mage" or "General Father" was doing an excellent job at prying open gates to all kinds of places, so I think that he would be the one that would manage a few seconds worth of opening a portal. I think he would be most interested in something obvious, being a military man, like a gun. But also, based on what he was chasing, I think he would try to grab medical technology... However, based on what ended up happening with this particular man, I do not know that any of his efforts to grab things would result in much, but I feel I shouldn't share because of spoilers~! Prompt: Does your world make use of connected dimensions or worlds?

Write your own response & tell me about yours!
It reads: World Building Journal Entry 11 Does your world make use of connected dimensions or worlds? That's my real handwritng! =) Yes! In the canon of this world, there is the mortal realm. If you were a character in this story, that's most likely where you would be found! The second most likely spot is in the fae. According to legends, a sulky god of life was trapped in a parallel dimension by his brother, the god of death, and what he created was the fae. Legends also suggest that when Tristeen cleaved the heavens from the earth, she banished a lot of gods to the fae, where they intermingled with the species there. Mortal realm can reach the fae through use of faery rings and other fae traps. Fae sneak in through "tears" in the weave. A less likely spot you might be found is in the heavens, where Gods (and a few other creations) live. Mortals can visit this place in dreams (though there is always a mad wizard somewhere trying to open a gate to heaven), and the place is perfection, light, and soothing. Hopefully, you will not find yourself in the Beyond, the realm of spirits and the dead, but many people end up there eventually. But, if you are not religious, but somehow manage to accumulate lots of "dark" or "forbidden" powers, you might become a denizen of the dread. The people who live in this space are often called fiends, devils, or demons. Their magical knowledge is where "profane" magic comes into the story. Here's my chicken scratch of how things interact dimensionally in this world

Prompt: A main character often gives off a strange smell. What is the smell and what causes it?

Write your own response & tell me about your character!
It reads World Building Journal Entry Ten A main character often gives off a strange smell. What is the smell and what causes it? In Astrecia, there are those who are known as Water-touched, and the smell that they give off should be impossible. It is the smell of pure water, almost imperceptible to the senses, but there as presently as it is when you sense humidity in the air. It's not a loud smell, but the fact that these individuals do not smell like anything else perhaps stands out. (Though in most cases, the dark eyes, blue hues of skin and hair might mark them as well.) The very spirit and essence of water magic courses through them. In an upcoming novel named The Veiled Haven, you will meet Caraxxus, the water elemental wizard from the undersea city of Lucent Cay. Similarly, the ones that are considered fire-touched give off a not quite definable smell of heat itself. It's not smoke, it's not cinnamon, but your nose perceives it. They are a little less blatantly visible than their counterparts, usually marked only by hair and eyes, though the more extreme cases of the magic inhabit them.

Prompt: In your world, do gods walk the earth? How do they interact with each other? How do they interact with mortals (followers and enemies)?

Write along!
It reads: World Building Journal Entry Nine, Part One Gods are definitely an active presence in my world. The underlying philosophy I apply to gods is that to be divine they must require worship to empower themselves (otherwise, what would be the point of the religion?), and that they are stronger than mortals in almost all cases. Gods come in different levels of authority, the first gods, or the eldest gods, have control over the most pure forms of the domains and so tend to be the strongest. The lowest-level gods may only control a very specific territory, maybe even as small as a town. Gods cannot directly interact with one another's worshippers, but they can certainly offer gifts that might lure in worshippers (including someone else's). They might also tend to take adverse physical circumstances (I didn't technically kill your follower! The sea storm that popped up in your area technically killed them! Usually, however, gods are benevolent because they want to attract worshippers. It reads: World Building Journal Entry Nine, Part Two Many sentient races avoid worshipping one god too directly to avoid the competition among gods. Sailors in particular are known for sometimes having several shrines on their boats to appease the various regional gods whose territories they may pass through. Worshipping gods and serving them is not without benefit; it often grants access to divine magic (magic of the soul) that allows for smites and healing alike. If you are supremely lucky (unlucky?) a God may appear to you when you are worshipping at a temple worthy enough for them to stand upon its hallowed ground. Gods can influence each other's mood. The Goddess of Chaos sometimes dates the major god of life and the god of death. It's well known that when she is allied with life, that there is a boom in growth and unique plants and animals thriving in the world. It is also known that when she changes boyfriends for the God of Death, incidents of dark expansion, control, and war sometimes occur. Clerics sometimes are diviners of divine couplings and what god/dess's followers are considered like unto friends, lovers, or bitter exes.

What is truly unique about your fantasy world? (Can creatures do magic, but humanoid beings cannot? Or humans never die of old age, but plants are short-lived?)
It reads: What is truly unique about your fantasy world? (Can creatures do magic, but humanoid beings cannot? Or humans never die of old age, but plants are short-lived?) So, I really love the way I have layered my parallel domains in this world (think fantasy heaven, hell, parallel dimension, but what if __ was changed about the landscape), but I really actually think I love my kobolds most. Kobolds, the way I write them, are like magic geiger counters for the fae. Kobolds in a natural state have a dragon they like to associate with, and after a few generations, will take on the color pattern of that dragon. They are scaley, usually with horns, tails, and other traits that help them resemble tiny, spindly dragons. However, the closer they get to an open fae gate (often marked by mushroom rings or other rifts in the landscape) the more they start to take on animalistic traits. Payta, in A Bunny and His Dragon, is one example. She has the horns and tails and fangs in a muzzle shape like a kobold, however much of her body is covered in black and white panda-like fur and her ears are rounded. This is because she is close to the Grinwilds which are saturated from Faery magic pouring out of the Grin. Kobolds that have been trapped in the fae also change. They tend to have extra ears, a vestigial set of fae wings (like jayune), and come in the colors of plants and flowers. They may even have what seems like plants growing out of their bodies. They might be fuzzy, but they are more often scaled. So, have a look around and see if you find any kobolds, that will tell you how close you might be to lands infested with monsters... or accidentally falling into a faery trap... or perhaps, meeting a dragon!

The prompt reads: What is the shape of your world? Is it round? Is it on a turtle's back? The Text reads: While the world turtle mythologies are really fun, Faegrin and Astrecia are two continents on a world that is a globe. The world is a similar size to earth, and orbits such that it has similar season lengths and days. The months are much more orderly on this world, though, with regular intervals and a day that is both the beginning and the end (and never counted). Some land masses are greatly impacted by magic and past fights that have occurred. Ocean currents are not predictable because undersea peoples such as triton, mermaids, or even dragons adjust the water temperature where they are to be more comfortable. The air is occupied by spirits, those who dwell on high mountains claim you can sometimes see them dancing among the clouds. And some mountains definitely seem to be alive...

It reads: The characters have been invited to a party! What type of party is it? Who invited it? Does the party go well or get interrupted (maybe by a villain)? Rosalind of Aurafell has invited you to a royal ball in the capitol. This is considered to be a formal attire event. It is rumored that Kyndle Solaris herself might attend, but you will certainly see the King and Queen at a distance, as well as Rosalind's half-siblings, the crowned heirs of Aurafell. An invitation from one of them would have secured you a seat at the best table, served the best food first, but the bastard princess still has connections and is acknowledged by her father. Attending the ball with her invitation will secure you access to all the food and drink you could want, and considering her tendency to make some mischief, probably a sneak peek into some of the castle's secret passageways. She knows just how to get into the library... and the larder. She is also often the culprit for these parties ending abruptly; one time her actions in the attic caused the great crystal chandelier to fall right through Duke Orzon's table. Fortunately (or not), he was not killed.
