Before @britishdragonflies.bsky.social #DragonflyWeek 2026 ends (tomorrow), I'll start a thread of #Dragonfly and #Damselfly pics. The star of this first post is a marvellous male Broad-bodied Chaser, who I photographed just over a week ago at Llanymynech Rocks. #Insects #Odonata #UKWildlife #ECK 🌿
Photo of a male Broad-bodied Chaser dragonfly (Libellula depressa) perched vertically at the top of a dead plant stalk, with head uppermost. The head is a chocolate brown colour, a colour also seen (with a few blue stripes) on most of the thorax and at the base of each of the four wings. The rest of the wings, aside from a dark group of cells towards the tips on the leading edges, are clear. The abdomen, which as the name suggests is quite broad (giving the Dragonfly a 'fat' appearance) is mostly a pale blue colour, with some yellow markings on the edges of some of the uppermost segments, and a blackish tip.

Old Wheel Dam in the Loxley Valley is alive with dragonflies at the moment. Species seen there yesterday include Brown Hawker, Emperor, Broad-bodied Chaser and Black-tailed Skimmer. All sightings added to #iRecord

A large, striking dragonfly with bright green markings and blue spots (males). Flying from July to October, they're often curious and may even hover close to investigate you!

I've seen two immature Migrant Hawker in recent days. The first was near Lower Failand, North Somerset (07.07.26) and the second, just across the Severn Estuary at RSPB Newport Wetlands (08.07.26). #odonata #dragonflyweek #ukdragonflies #ukwildlife @britishdragonflies.bsky.social

Since creating a small garden pond in 2020, Dave Craven has welcomed over a dozen species of dragonfly and damselfly.
