Drepanosaurs have such character!

Drepanosaurus, a Late Triassic arboreal reptile not closely related to anything living today. #Sciart

Could extraordinary plume-like structures like those on Longisquama and the recently described Mirasaura be present in other drepanosauromorphs? I think it is not completely out of the question!

Just noticed that Bluesky has now drag and drop! Which means I will probably be more active here now ^^

Here the results from yesterdays #paleostream:
Drepanosaurus, Ostenoselache, Schinderhannes and Cronopio.

Today's four random pieces of palaeoart:

William Francis Phillips' Iguanodon, Matt Celeskey's Gordodon, Victor O. Leshyk's Drepanosaurus, and Peter Schouten's Wintonotitan and Diamantinasaurus!

Context:

Trepanning is a surgical drilling into the skull, sometimes to let out evil spirits.

Drepanosaurus is an extinct reptile with very long hand claws.

Some spectacular Late Triassic treasures at the Bergamo Natural Science Museum for #FossilFriday - a Drepanosaurus with its prehensile, spiky-clawed tail & the Eumorphodon with its toothy grin; both holotypes 💚 #PaleoSky🦎

Drepanosaurs are great. We've got Turdhands, Claw Claw, and Beans, and they all looked kinda like this:

I made a weird little dude today! This is Gigan the Drepanosaurus, a Triassic species that is very tricky to model out of ceramic clay. He’s got his big digging claws up in a defensive posture and speculative, Mirasaura-like pseudo-feathers.

Can’t wait to see how he looks painted!
August 4, 2025 at 1:32 AM
Between Mirasaura and Longisquama, it's entirely possible (though still speculative!) that these sorts of feather-like structures are present in other drepanosaurs. So with that in mind, I couldn't resist sketching an annoyed Drepanosaurus with a flamboyant crest.

(He angy.)

I can't help but compare Drepanosaurus with its unusually stout forelimb and giant claw to alvaresaurs -- although, of course, there are distinctions. Always distinctions.
