There are three, maybe four databases worth bothering with: Postgres if you need a server, SQLite if you don’t, DuckDB if you need OLAP, maybe Clickhouse if you need server OLAP (I remain unconvinced) and Excel.

Doesn't DuckDB have a server now?

Quack, quack! 🦆🤖

You can now install #DuckDB in Claude Code from the Claude Marketplace

Reading Karpathy's HackerTube, and then seeing a bunch of other apps on top of Hacker News like HackerBooks and Wikihacks got me thinking.

We can just run HackerTube, HackerBooks & Wikihack directly in your terminal with DuckDB and Hugging Face.

Matt Martin's career started the way many data engineers do: wrangling spreadsheets. 🤠

After 20 years of working with different data infrastructures, Matt discovered #DuckDB, and everything changed.

I wrote a blog post about self-signing and -hosting @duckdb.org v2.0.0 extensions on S3-compatible object storage:

Host Signed DuckDB Extensions on S3-Compatible Storage - tobilg.com
DuckDB 2.0 can trust your own signing key. Sign an extension with OpenSSL, host it in an S3-compatible bucket and install it without -unsigned.

Faster DuckDB Queries with Vortex

What ClickHouse was for many cloud data warehouses, DuckDB is for local analytics: an extendable execution engine. Numbers are fast I assume it was not done on massive datasets. Haven't checked how numbers are against object storage.

Faster DuckDB Queries with Vortex
With the release of DuckDB 2.0, we look at how the Vortex core extension speeds up queries by computing over compressed data, and how to read and write Vortex files from DuckDB.

My "differential" DuckDB extension now also allows merging of branches and snapshots with v1.1.

It allows git-style branching, merging, snapshots, time-travel etc. with regular databases, locally or on S3-compatible storage.

Merges for DuckDB Branches and Snapshots - tobilg.com
differential 1.1 brings three-way merges to DuckDB: merge branches and snapshots, fast-forward, resolve typed conflicts with a table, merge schemas, use S3.

FYI, I recommend querying this with duckdb. duckdb.org

Just depends on the system. But I like Postgres, SQLite, Redis, ClickHouse, DuckDB, MySQL, and sometimes even proprietary options.

Podcast: Databases for Humans & Agents with Hannes Mühleisen 🎧

In this episode of the @datarenegades.bsky.social podcast, DuckDB co-creator @hannes.muehleisen.org speaks with @clkao.bsky.social about building databases that people actually want to use, including #DuckDB! 🦆 🦆

Someone sent you a .duckdb file and you don't have DuckDB? Drop it on Nitilo: DuckDB itself runs in your browser tab and opens it as tables, keys kept, lists and structs as JSON, SQL right there. Nothing is uploaded.

And polars is great! In most things we've converted to Python, we use polars (64-bit), and then I use DuckDB for more interactive or ad hoc exploration of the data.
