Finally had some time to experiment with DIY antennas for ADSB to track flight data from airliners and ultimately feed the data into ADSBexchange. RTL-SDR dongle with a λ/4 "cantenna" with a sleeve made of a corn can that just had almost the right dimensions. Using dump1090 and feedclient.

Recently picked up a software defined radio and I'm having some fun with it. Got dump1090 running so I can view and added KCCR to hear local air traffic, though my reception isn't great. Found some of the LoJack frequencies. Now I'm adding the weather and FM radio stations with the best reception.

Working on a Python service to maintain all-time statistics from my dump1090-fa data - both individual flights (highest, fastest, farthest, nearest) and operators seen. I'm using the Amadeus API for ICAO/IATA lookups, so I also track lookup failures. #adsb

i've been making my own airplane tracking setup: a USB radio to get the transmissions, dump1090 to turn that RF into bits, pyModeS for decoding (with a fairly hefty wrapper), and my own stuff for correlating and plotting. this is the first time i've had it working in real-time!
