because the universe craves balance, here is Banana the duckling completely unable to figure out what the hell his chicken moms are doing (dustbathing).

There is a very tired, dusty, grey cat in my house insisting he is Harry #DustBathing

Six extremely scraggy rescue hens came to live with us today. Despite their rather sad appearance, they immediately started scratching, pecking, dustbathing, and investigating their new environment. I love watching them become characters, everyone different and engaging 💕🐔. #backyardhens #rescuehens

chicken dust baths are hilariously hedonistic—would love to see a turkey dustbathing

Early morning patches of sun are sparse among the trees, so dustbathing spots are at a premium.

Silly #chickens...
Here is Dubious Intentions showing off the little hearts that cover her chest...
Some of the flock dustbathing. Apricot *really* getting into it--head upside-down, eyes closed, and one foot in her ear.

Dustbathing. This hen is a temporary guardian and will protect the chicks until they're independent. After that, she'll be returned to the previous owner to mother more chicks.

Have done a hard reset on his tracker and charged it back up to 50% which should do him in case he wanders off again. He’s rolling around in the dust at the bottom of the garden at the moment

🐈‍⬛💬 am dustbathing

my chickens are afraid of blue jays but when there’s a bear wandering around, they just carry on dustbathing.

out letting the dinosaurs have their evening yard wander and not taking my eyes off them because the way today’s gone something’s apt to try and kill them.
I’m not handling everything going wrong particularly well.

(a filthy #chicken is a happy chicken, they’re dustbathing.)

Sunbathing/dustbathing maybe

Anting is also a good guess

But also I’d add that birds are weirdos (I say lovingly) and I’ve seen my own and other folks do like things for no other reason than that they think they’re fun or funny or feel good

my bulk Anise Hyssop transplantation has successfully waylaid Groundhog Man (for now), so now I must handle my next plant-trampling boss: the House Sparrows enthusiastically dustbathing right fuckn on top of my Butterflyweeds that are desperately trying to stand back up 💀

It is such a privilege to work on a vegan sanctuary and see rescued hens living life on their own terms and getting such pleasure from the sociable act of dustbathing together.

Zooarch here - yes, I like these suggestions. The behaviour and agency of animals is often overlooked. I'm reminded of the shallow, irregular depressions sometimes revealed on site that may have been made by foraging/dustbathing chickens.
