The fixation on a small amount of lithium for ebikes is weird. Ebikes open up more recreational terrain, particularly for women, the elderly, and the disabled. I see nothing wrong with ebikes for recreational riding.

I think the question is, what do they replace? If an e-bike replaces a car (even for some trips), great! But if it’s just an expensive recreational bicycle, was it worth the lithium mining?

From my perspective they produce a lot more carbon than a regular bike. Lower ability to have an actual workout. Where I live Many people ride them at excessive speeds that they do not have the stamina or cycling experience to manage. Some cycle aggressively making regular cycling more of a battle.
I do not believe this is an unintended consequence. I think ebikes are a potentially revolutionary transportation improvement (especially for teens) and the people opposed to them hate them for exactly that reason

A great thing about ebikes is that they turn non-cyclists into cyclists.
I think people have yet to wake up to just how amazing e-bikes are. I commute about 20 miles a day, using about 10 cents of electricity. (Mostly on safe trails.)
Every time I ride my brain is ecstatic. I get a workout, but don’t need to shower when I get to work.

the confidence gained by having an ebike really can't be understated in terms of how far someone is willing to ride and the conditions they're willing to ride in. even when i biked daily when i was younger, i never did 8+ miles in a day. yesterday i did 13 because i knew i'd be able to keep going.

Was just talking to my brother-in-law who lives in suburban sprawl San Diego. Ebikes are now ubiquitous there and have actually lead to kids being able to be independent and hang out with each other despite the horrible built environment.
So naturally there's a big push there to ban ebikes

While there are all kinds of reasons why families move to the suburbs, some people make the mistake of moving there because they think their kids need space. That's not really true. What kids need are other kids.
The hill I will die on is that this is not a digital problem. We don't send younger kids out to play by themselves anymore for fear of kidnapping/CPS, and those kids become teens who don't do it either. There's also a loss of third spaces for teens. Even the freaking malls require chaperones.
