Organizations in India will gain a more integrated route to obtaining and maintaining Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs) as eMudhra Limited (eMudhra) incorporates LEI application and renewal into its established identity verification and onboarding processes. The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) today announces eMudhra’s appointment as a Validation Agent of Legal Entity Identifier India Limited (LEIL) in the Global LEI System, enabling this integration. eMudhra will work as a Validation Agent of LEIL, a GLEIF-accredited LEI Issuer and wholly owned subsidiary of the Clearing Corporation of India Limited (CCIL). LEIL is currently the only LEI Issuer recognized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in India under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act. The arrangement will enable eMudhra to incorporate LEI application and renewal services into established identity verification and onboarding processes, reducing the need for organizations to complete separate checks across different services. LEIL will ensure issuance and maintenance of LEI records in accordance with Global LEI System requirements. The appointment shows how globally standardized organizational identity can be embedded within existing digital trust infrastructure. This can help organizations identify themselves consistently across financial markets, payment systems and cross-border digital processes. In March 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a master direction consolidating existing LEI requirements for specified transactions in government securities, money market instruments, foreign exchange instruments and derivatives. All resident and non-resident participants undertaking transactions within the scope of the direction must obtain an LEI and ensure that it remains current. This policy foundation has contributed to sustained LEI adoption in India. India became the jurisdiction with the largest number of active LEIs in January 2026 and recorded the highest growth rate of any jurisdiction during the second quarter. Integrating LEI services into established onboarding channels can support this demand while making standardized organizational identity more accessible across India’s financial ecosystem. The development also reflects a wider shift toward consistent organizational identification in cross-border financial processes. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) revised Recommendation 16 in June 2025. The revision establishes standardized information requirements for certain cross-border payments and recognizes the LEI as an identifier that can be used for legal persons. Jurisdictions are expected to implement the revised requirements by the end of 2030.
