#eScriptorium
Today at our Winter School on HTR of Historical Sources, we're working with eScriptorium, an open-source platform for transcribing historical documents!

Many thanks to @inriaparisnlp.bsky.social for letting us use their instance and supporting our school! 🙏

The other corpus I work on, the Jerusalem court registers, the sijillāt, has no machine-readable text at all. There the convention is not inherited; we have to set it ourselves. That turns out to be the founding act of the whole project rather than a technical detail.

1. eScriptorium 🆓
I use it daily. It is open-source, browser-based, and strong on right-to-left and non-Latin scripts. There is a catch: you need a server to run it, and shared instances often ask you to release your data and models openly in return.

There is no single best. My own preference is eScriptorium. Personally, the technique is not that hard to acquire. For a beginner, though, I'd point to Transkribus: it is easier to start with, and its cooperative model sits better with me than a purely commercial one.

#eScriptorium 26.07 is out since yesterday, and our maintainer just posted the blog post about it : escriptorium.eu/blog/2026-09...

And there is something we (the eScriptorium Steering Committee) wanted to talk to you about.
July 2026 Release
The 26.07 release brings document-scoped ontologies, a new Overview panel for regions and lines, an Ontology Overview page for quality control, custom transcription fonts, full document archives and a...

2/ For the first time in the history of eScriptorium, and maybe for a project in DH (?), we found security issues that were bad. And I mean very bad for some.

This led us to record 5 CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) and learn to follow a protocol we never had to deal with before.

3/ Because we are an open source software, people install it in place we don't control: that's basically the goal of the decentralization behind eScriptorium.

So we tried to reach out and warn all known instances of the patch (and in some case help them).

From now on, CVEs will be recorded.

4/ If you didn't see the articles lately, AI is there in both development and security. Linux Kernels went from an average of 500 CVE / release to 1250 and then 2000 in the span of 4 releases.
And let's say we can see that agentic coding has an impact on our work (and we have only one Hassen).

this is either already OCRed stuff or whatever native capacity is in AnythingLLM; most of my stuff is either published material-- a treatise by Jean Paul Marat from 1773-- or manuscript where I need some kind of transcription thing. working on escriptorium for that

After multiple setbacks during the summer, eScriptorium 26.7 will be out after its month long beta test on Friday.
