Cancer diagnosis rates are rising among adults under 50 in England, charity analysis finds
An analysis of NHS data in England by the World Cancer Research Fund has found that diagnosis rates for several cancers have increased among adults aged under 50 between 2001 and 2023. The charity describes the trend as concerning, although cancer remains far more common in older people. Prostate cancer diagnoses among men under 50 rose from the equivalent of one case per 100,000 men in 2001 to 3.6 per 100,000 in 2023. Rates of womb cancer in women under 50 increased from 1.8 to 3.9 per 100,000 over the same period, while breast cancer diagnoses rose from 42 to 47.5 per 100,000. Bowel cancer showed one of the larger increases, rising from 3.9 to 8.4 cases per 100,000 adults under 50. Kidney cancer rates doubled from 1.5 to three per 100,000, while liver cancer rose from 0.5 to 0.8 per 100,000 and early-onset pancreatic cancer increased from 0.8 to one per 100,000. The findings follow separate Cancer Research UK figures indicating that overall cancer incidence among 25 to 49-year-olds in the UK increased by 24% between the early 1990s and 2019. Dr Giota Mitrou, the World Cancer Research Fund's executive director of research and policy, said the wider pattern of early-onset cancer needed to be treated as a serious research and prevention priority. The charity stressed that the biological reasons behind the rise are not yet fully understood and called for further studies into possible drivers. A new trial, Prospect-UK, will follow 250,000 people over time to examine diet and lifestyle factors associated with the increase in bowel cancer among younger adults.
