A Canadian Earth imaging company, EarthDaily, has secured a $3-million task order from NASA to evaluate how its commercial satellite data can complement the long-running Landsat Earth observation program. The Vancouver-based company, launched in 2021, will provide Earth observation data to NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which operate Landsat. NASA chose EarthDaily due to its 'forward-thinking' approach to Earth imaging, with CEO Don Osborne stating that the company designed its system to be compatible with Landsat and Europe's Sentinel satellite programs. EarthDaily's eight satellites can cover all of Earth's landmass in two days, collecting data across 22 spectral bands including visible, near-infrared, short-wave infrared, and thermal infrared wavelengths. The pilot program aims to assess the consistency and quality of EarthDaily's satellite measurements compared to Landsat data, with potential applications in identifying patterns such as coastline changes, deforestation, and glacial melting. The collaboration also explores how commercial data can assist in machine learning and AI observation models, ensuring data quality to avoid false positives in scientific analysis. NASA's goal is to expand AI use in scientific research and data analysis, leveraging the combined data from Landsat and commercial providers like EarthDaily. The findings will be reviewed jointly by EarthDaily and USGS over an undetermined period. Landsat, operational since 1972, provides the longest continuous U.S. Earth observation record, making it a critical reference for long-term environmental monitoring.
