This was the biggest rattlesnake I've seen in the wild, 5 feet plus and truly impressive girth. Crossing a trail, he was calm, confident, and simply waited for us to leave. He was number 8 of 9 seen that week.

Eastern Diamondbacks are huge, thick-bodied snakes with beautiful, intricate patterns that provide excellent camouflage. They are declining throughout their range and it's a privilege to see one.

Our host texted us that he had a "nice" EDB about half a mile from us. As we raced off to see it, this (first image) was in our way. Second image: the "nice" EDB, a real lunker. I wish we could have measured and weighed it.
