so my HVAC guy told me bluntly that they no longer recommend nest thermostats as google regularly messes things up, like failing to connect to the fan system of a few different (and common!) HVAC units. Recommends Ecobee, which is what I am replacing all of my Nests with

They offered a discount on their most expensive thermostat as a replacement, not the more affordable unit. So, I bought an ecobee to replace it.

Ecobee still giving bad advice on the outdoor temperature at which you should shut off your heat pump.
Hint for Ecobee: especially at thermostat setup, the thermostat knows nothing about the house and nothing about the heat pump…therefore it should give zero advice on this topic.

Ecobee has discontinued email support. All support now is through FB messenger or Whatapp, or by phone (with loooong hold times.)
Let this be a warning.
(It sucks because ecobee collects good data)

I’m not sure my Ecobee has that feature but it would be helpful when my daughter has her window open and the comes down at sets it to 67 in the summer

Nest is poorly functional as these things go (I do not recc). There are better smart thermostats. (We have an Ecobee, which is very good for data, can be iffy on integration.) But Honeywell makes great ones, is solidly not in the “We Will Sell your Data” market. Skip the ‘zon one.
