amazing — I’ve always had an interest and read a lot of the ecocrit stuff without that being a thing I actually work on, so I’m pushing myself to actually dig in

My sense is that that's a different area entirely from interpretive, aesthetic ecocrit -- which, at least as I've encountered it, is influenced by Latour and the broader 2010s "nonhuman turn." An idealist approach to overcoming man/nature binaries (hybrids!!) prevails over a focus on capital.

And Tyler's OP in the Atlantic feels like a great opportunity for feminist STS- and ecocrit-types to point out his numerous pedagogical blind spots (no wonder he wasn't being offered tenure if he's this myopic), and double down on the importance of these fields in an age of technofeudalism??

Ok so I'm giving a talk in English last week in Amiens. It's a rehash of my medieval oyster stuff for an ecocrit seminar. Audience is mostly undergrads. My host asks me if there's a medieval equivalent to the French expression of calling someone a 'bit of an oyster.' +

Prob the 2nd ASLE conference, 1993? Panel of academics OUTRAGED that Farley Mowat rather infamously made up a lot of Never Say Wolf. "But it says NONFICTION on the cover!"
Ecocrit is my field, but the pieties, like all pieties, are indeed tiresome.
(Check out Pierre Charbonnier, he's quite good).

Nice to see real ecocrit coming out of Utah all these years after they told me it wasn't legit because post structuralism. 🤦

They save, rehabilitate and rewild elephants and other animals in Kenya. Their IG is a balm in these times. I find their work socializing the animals particularly interesting re: human/animal communication.
Haraway has been a hero to me since I did my PhD work in the 90s (early days of ecocrit).

SO fun!
I was just looking at my PhD work from the late 90s (when my dept. was VERY side eye at the whole ecocrit project) and it's so heartening to see how it all became a Real Subject.
