Strong gun control is one of the reasons I chose to make Canada my home, and one of the reasons I’m proud to be Canadian.

Today, my heart is with all the victims of that horrific day in 1989, and with the survivors who carry those memories every single day.

After the mass #femicide at #Écolepolytechnique in my hometown of #Montréal on #6December 1989, we feminists said: Nous n'avons pas peur. Nous ne devons pas nous taire. Nous sommes ici pour de bon. We are not afraid. We will not be silent. We are here to stay.
Still true. Still f**king true.

In addition to some Canadian stats below, please also remember that Oxfam, the UN, Amnesty International all report that (conservatively) 70% of the people murdered in Gaza have been women children, with 10’s of thousands more missing.

Their families and friends have lived longer without them than with them. And yet their absence can still be felt. We, as a nation, will never truly know what we lost on this day 35 years ago. #December6 #EcolePolytechnique

It’s December 6. The anniversary of the mass murder of 14 women in #Montréal by an envious misogynist at #ÉcolePolytechnique in 1989.
Such a powerful and painful memory. They were my age, mostly students, murdered for being women.

Polytechnique anniversary #EcolePolytechnique is something we cannot forget.
I am an older white guy who used to hunt.
Back then no one I knew thought owning an assault style rifle was a good. I won't even repeat what was often said about the few who did.
With the exception of shotguns

The Montreal Massacre happened in my first year of university and opened my naive eyes to the world I lived in. A tragedy that continues to serve as a reminder of how we can never stop combating hate and working towards equality.

There's a date in Canadian history I just can't find any time for humour. Today's that day. #halifaxexplosion #EcolePolytechnique Lives lost by disaster, lives lost by hatred. It must be the saddest day. May both never happen again!

On this day, and every day, we join those across the country demanding an end to gender-based violence everywhere that it occurs.

Their deaths sparked a national reckoning on misogyny & violence against women. This day calls on all of us to honor survivors, challenge harmful attitudes, and advocate for women’s safety & rights. #NationalDayofRemembrance #ÉcolePolytechnique

I was a kid when this happened, but I remember most how shaken the city was, and for a while. It’s a miracle my generation got from elementary to uni without armed guards, metal detectors and such. Let’s create communities of care 🖖🏾🇨🇦 #cdnpoli
The Polytechnique massacre wasn't just a mass shooting — it was a mass femicide. The gunman explicitly targeted women and blamed feminists for the troubles in his life. We must fight like hell to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Don’t you dare forget their names.

A good first step.
Yet, I think this blunder by @MarkJCarney is as much about epistemic ignorance of sexism as it is about #Quebec.

To mix up a most horrifying massacres of women at #ÉcolePolytechnique, is indicative of the speaker's gender blind spots
