Edward Abbey has long been a fierce voice for conservation—not because he romanticized nature, but because he remembered we’re part of it.

Philosopher Nel Noddings drew a line between "caring for" and "caring about."

We can care for the people in front of us. We can only care about everyone else.

That distinction feels like permission, somehow.

Western philosophy imagined the self as separate, bounded, independent.

Care ethics suggests something different: that we're made of relations, not despite them.

Maybe "I" was never as solid as we thought.

Kintsugi is a small act of resistance against throwaway culture. This broke, and here we are anyway, choosing to make it beautiful. I find that more meaningful than new.

Is inflation an inconvenience, or an invitation to rethink how we live?

Small living is sometimes framed as a response to crisis. But what if it's the other way around — what if the crisis simply gave us permission to try something that was already interesting?

Resilience isn't about having more in reserve. Sometimes it looks like needing less to begin with.

I tried to repair my umbrella last rainy season. The ribs were fixable.

But the handle was fixed, I needed to break it in order to fix it. Also no replacement.

The whole thing had to go. It’s strange that the part that breaks first is the hardest to replace.

When prices keep climbing, I notice something unexpected: wanting less.

Not as deprivation, but as a kind of clarity.

The list of what I actually need turns out to be shorter than I thought.

Going plastic-free used to be an option that was hard to do.

Today, with oil crisis, we realize how dependent our economic system is to petrochemical.

I just wish to have a system that can survive the crisis without people suffering.

I assumed going plastic-free would mean giving things up. What I found was more like a slow reorientation: I didn't lose convenience so much as I stopped defaulting to it without thinking.

I used to say "protect nature" without thinking about what it means.
One day I noticed that protection still implies a manager and something to be managed.
Now I try to reframe it: I want to “coexist with nature.”

Emotion labeled as less reliable than reason. Nature managed as a resource. I used to accept both without question. Thinking about ecology, I started noticing they share the same underlying logic that dominates nature, women and marginalized populations.

I know people are panicking over the lack of plastic raw materials in Japan. But is it wrong to feel hopeful that people are finally realizing and taking actions to reduce plastic use?

Traveling slowly through a place, I notice how rarely nature is treated as a partner—more often a backdrop or something to manage. The logic of domination runs quietly through so many arrangements. Slow travel feels like practicing something different.

"Rational" over "emotional." "Culture" over "nature." These pairings share the same architecture: one half must be above. I keep wondering when we decided hierarchy was the only way to relate—to each other, and to the natural world.

There's a question I return to: is it possible to live on less and feel more? I don't have a clean answer. My stupid brain still thinks that I need to have more to be happy, which isn’t necessarily true.
We are full of contradictions.
