Interfaith ecumenicism?

There is a chunk of MAGA that is vehemently anti-Catholic. Ecumenicism is the same as blasphemy for some of these people.

It’s something that has disappointed me a lot about Tyler Cowen, among others. Intellectual ecumenicism has to be bounded by decency; or, to paraphrase, “My right to thought experiments ends where race realism begins.”

@whitehouse-47.bsky.social Faith encompasses far more than Christianity and most Christians embrace ecumenicism: the recognition of other religious and faith-based gatherings and their symbols or traditions. What in G-d's great and wonderful world is wrong with the staff in the White House.

“like a Mecca”?
Odd choice of words for someone who eschews ecumenicism because he thinks his faith is the One True Faith.

The Society of St. Pius X was founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in opposition to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council from 1962-1965, which promoted the role of laypeople, ecumenicism and interreligious dialogue and enabled Mass to be celebrated in vernacular languages..

every time i get bummed about the fact that religious ecumenicism feels like a super niche thing, i remember that Jonathan Edwards's Yale masters examination in the 1720s was about "the heresy of Episcopacy"! we have come a long way in, like, chilling out about intra-Christian disputes
I've said it before and will say it again: the fact Protestant Americans left and right are this invested in the fate of the Catholic Church outside of persecuting it would've given the Founding Fathers an aneurysm and is arguably one of America's greatest interfaith success stories
my favorite thing about the sspx/lefebvrists debacle is the number of rando protestants who are outraged about who and who is not in communion with rome

like, buddy, i have some news about what happened in 1521. you're gonna want to sit down.

Soldier are often surprised when their Chaplin explains that valid last rites can and will be given by *any* Chaplin, or failing that, any soldier who can read the rite. "Even the Rabbi?" "Yes even the Rabbi." Ecumenicism in death.

Republican Catholic ecumenicism: Snake handlers, speaking in tongues
June 16, 2026 at 2:10 PM
Catholic ecumenicism: committees that meet for generations to try to refine the word choice about Filioque in Greek, Latin, and Aramaic to narrow the East-West difference by 2% per decade. Look for tiny opportunities and loopholes with Anglicans like “if a married ordained male priest is widowed.”

A few things:

1) there is NO "American Church." It does not exist and not pushing back against the idea is dangerous.

2) The idea of being ecumenicism is EXACTLY what conservative Catholics hate about Vatican 2. And that group includes Vance, so he is lying through his teeth here.
JD Vance: "One of the things I love about the American church is there are all of these different pathways to God ... sometimes with snake handlers, sometimes with speaking in tongues, sometimes with a beautiful Catholic mass. But I think all of these pathways really matter."

Ecumenicism!

They know good and well that there is religious animus hiding behind the b.s. conservative ecumenicism.

Will this cause them to turn on the fascist policies of the Trump regime.....naw.

The "ecumenicism" of the evangelicals is a charade. This is just an opening salvo in marginalizing and removing the religiously "unpure".

The scene with the mosque was a classic barn raising. Made even more poignant by the cross-cultural ecumenicism of it all.

I am really liking #Kesari so far it's pulling some universal threads. #HATM

A chance for real ecumenicism, lol.
May 28, 2026 at 2:11 PM
It doesn't need to be anti-theism but it should just be wishy washy ecumenicism either. I dunno

Your ecumenicism (if you will) about the term is freeing.

I'm just trying to figure it all out.

I’m a profoundly Christian adjacent,

Wholly appreciative not-cognitively Christocentric Christian contemplative practicioner

non-practicing Quaker who works deeply with Catholic sisters

who doesn’t believe in anything but finds Christ-consciousness and deep ecumenicism necessary to breathe

See, I disagree that “by any measure” the idea of god is irrational. I think there are a number of ways beyond the naive or brute facticity of god or the divine to conceive of it. I’ve shared the hermeneutic view. But there’s also pragmatism, ecumenicism, etc.

I've noticed since the fall of Roe that the phrase "Christians and Catholics" has returned. Like the big politically-necessitated ecumenicism has been turned off after 50 years. A lot of times on the newscasts when covering holidays. "The nation's Christians and Catholics celebrate Easter."
April 4, 2026 at 12:04 AM
I’m making progress on my ecumenicism though. Haven’t yet this week made air quotes at my Catholic other half when the word Easter is used in reference to this coming Sunday.

irrefutable proof that JD Vance has drunk deeply from the Vatican II source and is an impassioned advocate of interconfessional dialogue and ecumenicism!
Great item today from @cheetah.bsky.social on JD Vance's forthcoming conversion memoir. TL;DR: Although Vance is Catholic, the cover photo for his book depicts a (very photogenic) Methodist church. www.thebulwark.com/i/192730409/...
