So many weeds contain nutritious elements. Did you know the seeds from plantain (not the plantain from the banana family) is what produces psyllium > metamucil? And dent-de-lion! Great in salads.

Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans) is a common evergreen groundcover with purple spring flowers. Native to Europe & a member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family, it spreads quickly & can get invasive. Young leaves are edible & can be used as tea. #foraging #photography #edibleinvasives #edibleweeds

Something that's not commonly known: Many veggies were bred from the wild mustard plant. (GMO is not always a bad thing) eattheplanet.org/wild-mustard...

Invasive wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa in the carrot family) is a biennial plant with sweet taproots if eaten before it flowers. Be careful with ID: some related plants (like hemlock) are poisonous. Sap causes blisters; use gloves & long sleeves when harvesting. #foraging #photography #edibleweeds

It can be confusing if you want to eat #EdibleWeeds when dandelion leaves look like this AND like this.

Purple dead nettle (lamium purpurium in the mint family) is a common spring plant popping up in fields, & along woodland edges. The young plants are edible & delicious! The plant can also be made into a salve for skin sores. I gathered a bunch & made a nice salad. #foraging #edibleweeds #photography

Burdock (Arctium lappa in the aster family) is a tall biennial herb with purple flowers. It is much despised because of the burrs. But it's edible! Peel/boil & eat 1st-year roots or 2nd year flower stalks. Root & leaf wash can treat skin problems. #foraging #photography #wildflowers #edibleweeds

This “weed” is a superfood. 💚
Purslane grows in cracks, gravel, and neglected corners—and it’s packed with Omega-3s, vitamin C, and even melatonin.
Eat the weeds.

Taking some inventory of the edible plants in my yard (yes, some invasive, I’m working to replace with natives). Today I spotted speedwell, henbit, grape hyacinth, dandelion, and creeping bellflower. #foraging #backyardforaging #edibleweeds

Dandelion leaves to go into my lunch salad, #rhubarb stalks will be turned into rhubarb and ginger chutney. Might add some apples from the garden to the chutney, too, since there are so many of them. #BackyardGardening #EdibleWeeds #Epping3076

Found pineapple weed growing. Crush a flower between your fingers and it smells sweet like pineapple.
It’s in the same family as chamomile, and the flowers brew into a tea that calms your stomach and helps you sleep.

Here are some plants we call weeds that you can eat. I saw these and many more on my suburban walk yesterday.
1. dandelion (dents de lion) good in salads
2. plantain (not the banana-plantain species) better cooked
3. mallow, thickens stews.
