I was somewhat involved in the UK / London skeptic scene 2007-2010, it was initially an exciting and vibrant time, especially with the Singh / Chiropractic case, and Sense were a solid part of it. Both fallout from Elevatorgate (sigh) and targeting by gamergate caused the whole thing to blow up

A few years ago I would have believed that most of the people that responded that way were responding in good faith. This despite the rising of the online descendants of 'Actually it's a matter of ethics in gaming journalism' and similar Elevatorgate posters.

I think you’re spot on. The splintering following elevatorgate and the utter contempt for atheism+ by the big players in movement atheism really soured me on the whole idea of atheism as a primary path toward developing a liberatory politics.

(You can look up "elevatorgate" in a search engine if you want. But it will not make you happier.)

There was a thing where "rationalism" as a modern movement got weirdly remolded in the 00s, first because a bunch of neoconservatives wrote "rationalist" books around 2006 and filtered out a lot of people uncomfortable with Islamophobia, and then "elevatorgate" filtered more people out around 2009

His 'friends' have outed themselves long time past. They issues with #MeToo back then and took to harassing women quite eagerly. Before that was #ElevatorGate, they sided with the creeper then too.

Let me guess how they excused themselves, 'they didn't leave the liberals, the liberals left them'

Elevatorgate, and the feminists didn’t win

I think it’s important to note that both comics and online atheism experienced their own -gates right before (atheism) and concurrently (comics) and in retrospect, it feels like a concerted effort which too many dudes fell right into.

ElevatorGate kicked off bc an atheist woman asked men to not >

I got so hoodwinked by Sokal during undergrad. Krauss and Dawkins I realized pretty quick were shitheads after elevatorgate. I wonder if Dawkins will sign.
August 23, 2026 at 9:30 AM
Yeah I completely went off Dawkins because of elevatorgate (plus a bunch of really Islamophobic stuff he said around then). Can't recall what the first thing that alerted me to Krauss being a shithead was, but I think it was the around the same time.

The center of this ven diagram is everyone against Richard Dawkins in elevatorgate

Honestly I read The God Delusion repeatedly and liked it. I read Harris’s “letter to a Christian nation” and liked it. I was on board with New Atheism basically until “elevatorgate” pulled back the curtain.

elevatorgate was pretty revealing of what atheism was as a subculture

Seeing that Internet atheists are still blowing gaskets about hijabs is giving me serious ElevatorGate flashbacks, when Internet atheists decided once and for all they hated women more than religion.
when i say i hate reddit atheism this is what i am referring to. islamophobia is so baked into both political parties in this country it's disgusting. @altnoaa.bsky.social is just a bigot pretending that this is a principled stance

So, the question became: Stick to their ideals, or stick by a popular guy?

The young atheists who stayed leftists and the young atheists who pivoted right-wing are a split mostly caused by Elevatorgate.

I hate what he's said afterwards, especially post-Elevatorgate, but I will always be sympathetic to Richard Dawkins for having the cojones to say "no, these stories you were told as a child that you found morally monstrous were, in fact, morally monstrous."
August 4, 2026 at 5:54 PM
That's actually mostly due to Elevatorgate, a scandal nobody remembers but probably led to all this right-wing bullshit.

Major leader in a movement of young atheists got caught trying to sexually harass someone on an elevator, and drove a wedge into that community.

currently hot in /r/trollxchromosomes but it's backwards. 'elevatorgate' and the harassment of @skepchick.org were 2 years earlier. And it wasn't just her, but all women in the atheism/skeptic spheres. And the LGBTQ+ community, too.

and both were just the culmination of years of cultural bile.

You get one guess as to which side of Elevatorgate he was on
July 25, 2026 at 3:26 PM
I think a plausible account is that modern British transphobia = Sense About Science / LM + "feminism" in the aftermath of Elevatorgate + The Guardian after their writer got sued by cranks.
July 24, 2026 at 12:49 PM
Yeah, I think weirdly the necessity for increasingly vocal feminism in scepticism in the wake of 2011’s #elevatorgate also made naïve groups of well-meaning scientifically-trained men (and women) susceptible to the kind of 2nd-Wave dogma people like Bindel adhered to.
