#emissionsgap

DYK that this year’s @unep.org #EmissionsGap report includes a chapter on what works to reduce emissions?

The report identifies 63 structural changes – ranging from investments in renewable energy to the imposition of carbon taxes – that have helped bring down emissions significantly.

👇
Current policies put the world on course for up to 2.8°C of warming this century.

That means greater risk from extreme heat, floods & wildfires.

But this future isn’t inevitable.

Why only one? Chapter 6 of @unep.org’s new #EmissionsGap Report found 63 cases where new or stronger climate policies brought emissions down, by about 19% on average compared to doing nothing. Proof that policy works. Time to dust it off. 🕸️

Exceeding 1.5°C of warming is now unavoidable.

But how much further temperatures rise depends on how quickly we cut emissions.

The new #EmissionsGap Report shows how deep those cuts must be to limit warming and make a return to 1.5°C possible.

“Opportunities to accelerate action have never been more abundant.”

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres calls for stronger climate pledges & wider use of proven policies as the world is set to breach the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C limit of global warming.

Over the past 10 years, renewable electricity capacity has grown 3x faster than expected.

But progress on cutting fossil fuel use, tackling deforestation & reducing methane is still falling short.

Global warming will overshoot 1.5°C in the coming years.

There’s still a chance to bring temperatures back down, but the window is closing fast.

This is the point of return.

“We must pull out all the stops to minimize peak warming & return to 1.5°C by the end of the century.”

UNEP Executive Director IngerAndersen.bsky.social calls for urgent action to cut emissions, building on climate policies that have already proven successful.

The #EmissionsGap Report is clear: we must rapidly cut all GHG emissions to keep any overshoot as short and minimal as possible, including action to #CutMethane

The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone.

But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.

Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century.

What needs to change to limit overshoot and bring global warming back to 1.5°C by the end of the century?

From renewable energy to coal and methane, UNEP's latest #EmissionsGap Report sets out the changes needed to help make that possible.

"We are on a diet where we eat a large kale salad but refuse to give up our daily triple cheeseburger. We are adding renewables, yet global fossil fuel use continues hitting record highs to feed growing power demands."

The window has closed; this year's #EmissionsGap report states that overshoot of 1.5°C is now inevitable.

What's needed to limit the overshoot to 1.7-1.8°C & return to 1.5°C requires gov'ts to step up. 🌎greenhouse gas emissions must drop 45% by 2035 compared to 2025 levels.
