Are there "new racists"? Yes, they're Republican. Are there "old racists"? Yes, they're Republican.

If you want to spot a racist, let their level of empathy be your guide. A racist has no empathy – or at best "empathy" only for people in their tribe – which is not empathy, but merely extended ego.

Yes well it does require things like “empathy” and possessing a basic understanding that all of our lives are interconnected

Empathy is foundational to being human. Without empathy, you're incomplete. Without empathy, a person is a psychopath-sociopath (ASPD).

Empathy is *required* in order to experience love. In the absence of empathy, any behavior that at first glance, appears to be love – is merely parroted behavior.

"Being aware of other people’s feelings, sensitive to them, and able to put yourself in another person’s shoes is pretty much essential for humans to function as a community. But the current conservative project has zero room for that sort of thing."

"Right now, we’re living in Trump’s world, in Vance’s world, in Hegseth’s world. This is what a world without empathy looks like. It’s a world of constant othering, of constant rage, of a constant belief that life is a zero-sum game. But nothing flourishes in that world." — @snipy.bsky.social

Devils advocate: the title of the book is "toxic empathy." Implying nontoxic empathy. Nontoxic empathy is compassionately considering the woes and sufferings of her and her friends. Toxic empathy is everything else.

No, Empathy Is Not a Sin
A recent book tries to make the case that empathy is leading Christians astray. What it really reveals is a fear of losing power.

Empathy without discernment can be manipulated. The fix for unwise empathy is more compassion. Singer & Klimecki research. 🧵. Empathy leads to burn out. Bloom adds its like a spotlight & biased toward people like us. Gilbert labels compassion as sensitivity to suffering & a commitment to relieve it

We have to do something about the broke mind virus. Our society is dealing with a suicidal lack of empathy
Honestly, it seems like so many folks who move into the right-wing infotainment space do so because they just want to be a jerk in public.

i don’t know how anyone can watch the transphobic ads from Turek et al and not be genuinely concerned that the democratic party is heading down the same path as Labour and the viciously transphobic policies their administration has enacted

According to a recent survey, Americans are divided on whether empathy is a good thing. 83% of the religiously unaffiliated agreed that empathy is "a foundational moral value that helps build a healthy society” while only 42% of white evangelicals did. [kottke.org]

PRRI’s 2026 American Values Survey reveals some, uh, interesting views on whether Americans think empathy is a good thing or not. Those respondents unaffiliated with a religion were much more inclined to think that
