I quite liked Exercism back when, also the various Koans repos have some gems depending on lang.

For games though, the main one I've had my eye on lately is EmuDev, which is about learning NES programming. Not the most practical but...

the other elephant in the room is that there's competing projects already, because I made the classic mistake of talking about an idea before releasing anything, and that colours my thinking enormously. I don't enjoy “competing” in an open-source context. maybe it's emudev trauma

Please also go subscribe to my friend Zayd, he has a YouTube channel about the emudev side of emulation and will be talking soon about this process and more (1 or 2 videos):

Whenever I try to challenge this, they bring out the strawtranny violently threatening all cis people with genocide :V

i’d just leave if it wasn’t for the fact that these guys usually operate in niches within niches relating to things like emudev, cryptanalysis, reverse engineering, and compression

I see ai coders saying that ai doesn't make you dull and disengaged, but when a emudev offloads all the research, code, docs, and even the blog post to claude, and couldn't even delve into the research and make it theirs, how can i trust that ai is a tool when i see total cognitive offload?
Dude, this is genuinely so fucking disappointing. Nearly all of the commits I’ve seen for PPSSPP involve generative AI from Claude in the past week alone, and their entire newest dev blog is almost entirely written by Claude. Almost half of the commits in the past 3 months use Claude for AI code.

Someone posted a vibe-coded Genesis/Sega CD/32X emulator to the emudev Discord today. It's not particularly fast (a debug build of BlastEm is faster), it's not particularly accurate, it's not portable and the code looks about as you expect, but it does run games. Not sure how I feel about it.

If this is a problem for you ethically or morally, that’s fine, but please do not believe the bullshit AI bros spout when they insist to you that PS5 emulation is good now “because of AI”

It’s been half a decade of development and things are finally coming together

That’s just how emudev works

Why is he suggesting slopped out recomp code is better than nothing when you basically have to reverse engineer everything by hand again anyway to make sense of it all for maintenance?

Why does he minimize the role slopcoders have in us repeatedly losing experts in the emudev and homebrew scenes?

If you're an emudev who hates piracy you should join Nia Koukai and Rachel Bryk.

r/emudev was pretty much running rampant with slop emulators and then the mod team banned llm generated emulators AFTER it was a problem for a few weeks.

Can't really use anything now without an LLM touching it either, cause there's a good chance your critical libraries or OS use it somewhere.

A lot of emu/emudev discussions lately have been like this where someone does something cool, but has used an LLM to get there.

Suddenly it's trash, the dev is dumb, the project was never interesting anyway, some other thing is better, et cetera. Regardless of the actual effort or people behind it.

Emudev, recomps, shit even FPGA cores. I don't have own a single FPGA device and I'm still sad. Ah, Can't Have Shite In Detrite!
September 25, 2026 at 3:41 AM
Like it stopped being shocking the tenth consecutive time in a row I just (naively) thought emudev would be the last sector to be hit by the slopdemic, since emulation some would (incorrectly) argue is becoming "outdated" since the rise of FPGA and now native recomps.
