By Guty Schnauzer:

"This work provides experimental evidence that the Omicron BA.2.86 and JN.1 variants have developed a greater capacity to infect human proximal small intestine cells, something that distinguishes them from other recent XBB-derived variants."

The preprint tests infection of different SARS-CoV-2 variants in organoids, including enteroids (basically intestinal organoids), finding that the BA.2.86-derived variant JN.1, and BA.2.86 replicate much more efficiently in the enteroids than previous variants.

All Vγ subsets were affected, but the most striking reduction was in Vγ7 IELs. We connected the dots to find that that epithelial HNF4G/BTNL signaling was impaired, thus Vγ7 IELs failed to expand. Further, TNF exposure was sufficient to downregulate HNF4G/BTNL in murine and human enteroids. 3/n
