SCOTUS Hands Trump a Temporary Win In His Crusade to Restrict Mail Voting
The Supreme Court on Monday temporarily handed President Trump a key victory in his crusade to restrict mail-in voting. The unsigned opinion by the court’s conservative majority, issued over dissents from the three Democratic appointees, said it was too soon for states to challenge Trump’s executive order from March 2026 severely restricting mail-in voting because they had not shown how they would be harmed by it. “This ruling violates well-established precedents concerning this Court’s equitable discretion and needlessly injects chaos and uncertainty into the upcoming midterm elections,” Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote in dissent. “It also lets another shoe drop in the Kafkaesque nightmare that our precedents have been steadily creating for certain plaintiffs who seek to bring election-related challenges. The Court has held for a while now that even valid election-related legal claims can come too late. Today’s revelation is that such claims can also come too early—never mind that an election is looming and related harms are presently occurring. Never mind, too, that the Government (which controls the timing of proposed and final rules) can easily game the system.” While not a ruling on the merits of the executive order, the Court’s decision still overrules a series of...

LOGAN SQUARE — Open Books is closing its Logan Square store at the end of the month after three years in business. The bookstore at 2068 N. Milwaukee Ave. will close March 1 due to financial challenges and to “best protect our mission,” Executive Director Jennifer Steele wrote in a Wednesday announcement shared via email, on the company’s website and on social media. “We made this decision to best protect our mission and ensure that our partner communities, children, and families have equitable access to high-quality books, programs, and literacy spaces,” Steele wrote. “We know this news is disheartening, especially for our staff, neighbors, volunteers, and customers.” The store opened in 2023 with 60,000 books across two floors and has hosted readings, poetry slams, book fairs and book drives. Financial hardship and business challenges following the pandemic have hit nonprofits and other local bookstores that have recently closed, and Open Books has not been immune, Steele said. “Our team and Board of Directors has worked diligently to do everything in our power to keep our Logan Square store open and successful, however we can no longer operate it without risking the important work of our mission,” she wrote. “In making these decisions, we keep the children, families, and neighborhoods we serve at the center.” While the decision is disappointing, the Open Books team hopes people will continue to shop local and keep donating used books to the literacy nonprofit, she wrote. “This decision was not made lightly as we value our presence in the richness of Chicago’s bookstore and literary communities,” Steele wrote in the letter. “It is not a reflection of the efforts, talent, or dedication of our team, volunteers, or supporters.” The store in Logan Square carries 60,000 new and used books. Credit: Instagram Founded in 2006, Open Books aims to foster literacy among Chicago children and families through reading and writing workshops and book grants for underserved schools and nonprofit partners. Sales from its book stores support the nonprofit’s programs. The nonprofit still runs stores in Pilsen and the West Loop. Like the other two Open Books stores, the Logan Square outpost has offered a wide-ranging selection of new and used or donated books at reasonable prices, from fiction and children’s books to academic reference books and classic medieval literature. The Logan Square store hours for its final month in business will be updated soon via social media. The closure makes City Lit, 2523 N. Kedzie Blvd., Logan Square’s only bookstore. * * * **Support Local News!** **Subscribe to Block Club Chicago, **an independent, 501(c)(3), journalist-run newsroom.
