For a long time you couldn't use the Ericofon in much of America because The Phone Company demanded that you rent—yes, rent—your phone from them, and didn't support third-party hardware.
My grandad bought one (in beige) for his Michigan lake home because he was enamored with the design.
The town then (mid-1960s) still used party lines. Hilarity ensued when he asked the local Bell Telephone guys to install + wire it up so it would generate tones the local exchange would recognize.
