The FBI conducted a raid on a Beverly Hills mansion believed to belong to billionaire Stephen Cloobeck, a former donor and political ally of California Democratic politician Eric Swalwell, according to reports from Fox News and CNN. The search, which took place on Tuesday morning, is part of a federal investigation into Swalwell, who resigned from Congress and dropped out of the California gubernatorial race in April following allegations of sexual misconduct. Cloobeck, who had previously supported Swalwell's campaign with over $1 million and allowed him to stay at his mansion, severed ties with the politician after the allegations surfaced, stating, 'I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women.' The investigation into Swalwell has expanded beyond the initial allegations, with federal agents also seizing his electronic devices at San Francisco International Airport in August and searching his Washington home the following day. The warrant cited a civil rights law typically used against police officers for abuse of power, a legal analysis described as 'a stretch' by the conservative National Review. The Justice Department's actions have drawn attention as they occur just one week before the November 3 midterm elections, with the department having an informal 60- to 90-day period of 'heightened caution' before elections. Swalwell, who was one of President Donald Trump's chief political opponents, faces multiple investigations including from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The raid on Cloobeck's property is part of a series of federal actions targeting Democrats in the final weeks of the campaign, including searches of Rep. Ilhan Omar's home and the indictment of Virginia state Sen. Louise Lucas. Attorney General Todd Blanche, who has stated he 'works for President Trump,' has dismissed claims of political motivation, asserting the department does not engage in 'political paybacks.'
