gleam:
- doesn't try to type all of js or erlang so its type system is sound
- models all conversions as explicit function calls
- all you need is functions and data
- has the cutest mascot

I've amassed an amount of esoteric elixir/erlang knowledge in the past year and a half that I'm afraid may not be too useful outside of specific tooling

Workers are already actors. Expensive AF actors, but still actors.

What makes Erlang stand out is immutable data, so copying is safe and invisible. JS can’t retrofit that.

With shared memory you can build efficient Erlang-like actors. Workers won’t give you that.

⚗️ Elixir Tip #57 - Bit level pattern matching ⚗️

Parsing a sensor frame or a wire protocol? Binary pattern matching can do way more than strings. You can grab individual bits, change the endianness and read signed values!

⚗️ Elixir Tip #59 - Compressing data ⚗️

Sensor logs and JSON payloads tend to compress really well. No need for a 3rd party library since OTP ships with :zlib out of the box, and :zstd as of OTP 28!

⚗️ Elixir Tip #56 - State machines with gen_statem ⚗️

Is your GenServer turning into a pile of status flags? OTP ships with :gen_statem, a behaviour made just for state machines. Timeouts tied to a state are even built in!

Regarding image 1, box 8 (Erlang), the Ericsson office I worked in during the late 90s had 700 employees, each with their own landline phone and number.

How many external phone lines do you think there were in total serving the building, so that everyone could be on the phone whenever required?
