#nixlang
New experiment: what if you had #erlang call #elixirlang call #gleamlang call #elixirlang call #erlang and then package it all up in #nixlang gitlab.com/chiroptical/... #beam

Use flakes, and consider home-manager. The latter isn't necessary but it's kind of a shortcut to learning nixlang if you wanna set up programs with it. These days I find it more useful for symlinking config files

There are security concerns if you put sensitive values like passwords or api keys into your config, but sops-nix offers a solution to that. Its not for everybody, theres a big learning curve since you have to learn nixlang, but it solves a lot of longstanding computer configuration problems well

Its not hosting packages like a traditional package manager, but nixlang expressions to build those packages from public sources for the most part. We have had a good experience with it because being able to modularize and reproduce system exactly from just a set of config files is very powerful

I mean I already write GitHub actions that way, it’s not more complicated than that And for all the faults of nixlang at least it’s not fucking yaml

Versioning for the language itself, a feature that has long been talked about, is present in other languages, etc. This is in the roadmap for Lix: a language versioning scheme that allows you to make breaking changes to nixlang without breaking older revisions of the language itself.

right…this is why I said nixlang specifically…why are you necroposting to mansplain the wrong thing completely because you couldn’t understand what I was talking about rn
August 8, 2025 at 11:46 AM
That isn’t what I’m talking about, I’m talking about versions of nixlang itself.

if you're really committed to an FSF approved distro, check out guix. it doesn't include anything the FSF deems non-free/non-libre, and uses a modified version of the nix daemon using guile instead of nixlang for configuration (it's a scheme/LISP dialect).

nixlang haters will not see heaven

I think of myself as a strong functional programmer, but I'm convinced everyone who says nixlang isn't that bad is doing a bit.
November 20, 2025 at 7:54 PM
my approach to nix is the same as my approach to emacs: i know just enough nixlang/lisp to be dangerous and to accomplish my configuration goals

Also, I dug into it and the main excuse they had for their own custom Nixlang was that it had to be lazy.

Now that python is coming out with lazy imports, maybe that reason will be gone?

you *should* have to age verify before you're allowed to use Nix. can you imagine what encountering nixlang would do to a young mind?
brother what???

you lost me at praising nixlang. love lua though (outside of trying to build >1000loc software with it)

NixOS fixes this.

It’s easy as long as you understand nixlang, flakes, nixenv, nix home-manager, quantum mechanics, and can prove that P=NP.

nixos without nixlang... true bliss is within reach
March 30, 2026 at 10:01 PM
They could have just called it Nixlang or something and then there’d be separate words. Two out of three would tell you what they are in the name. IDEK why that eelco dolstra guy wanted to name everything nix but it’s a bit silly.
May 11, 2026 at 1:32 AM
people actually have been calling it nixlang 😭 the separation is kinda hard since people outside of nix usually are the ones who struggle to separate them. and we inside know the differences but hate the naming
May 11, 2026 at 8:01 AM
like to understand nixos you need to know what how nix the build tool works more or less and hot to write nixlang since it's lazy functional lang and what happens at eval time vs build time vs after as a service run on boot or wrapper script etc
January 26, 2026 at 4:41 PM
i use it for “too lazy to type the program out just spit out idiomatic code" in langs i know it will work etc but as an example in nixlang code generation can sometimes turn into a slow grind to a halt
January 11, 2026 at 10:03 AM
the real learning curve of nixos (besides The Docs Problem), is not understanding the pipeline of nixlang code gluing bash into build scripts at the bottom of it all -> nix build system writing files to nixstore -> nixos machinery using linux FHS and systemd symlinking it all in place to make OS
August 8, 2025 at 9:33 AM
@jessebot I’ve tried both. I don’t hate writing Nixlang. I did hate writing scheme

Well, I mostly hated not knowing which imports pull in what, what imports to use when without a lot of trial error and superstition. For all the complaints people have for Nixlang I found it way less disagreeable […]
