Animals do things that look flat-out impossible, from leaf-mimicking insects to species that copy predators. There is always an evolutionary reason behind the madness.

A new study found evidence of natural selection in the dogs of Chernobyl, but it’s still unclear what drove these genetic differences and what evolutionary advantages they may provide.

It was great to talk with the other Davids on @epthepod.bsky.social this week 😀.

We talk through several case studies of Applied Evolutionary Anthropology - incl work on child & polygynous marriage, overparenting, early puberty & the social learning of patriarchy.

New paper out in our special collection of Evolutionary Human Sciences on scientific racism, by philosopher Joanna Karolina Malinowska.

The paper describes "epistemic laundering" - how methodologically flawed claims about race continue to circulate in scientific venues despite repeated criticism

A species is a lineage that has a distinct evolutionary fate from other lineages.

The so-called species concepts (biological, phenetic, phylogenetic, ecological etc.) are not definitions but diagnostic approaches or algorithms for how to identify the appropriate lineages at the appropriate scale.
hey biology bsky, i'm crowdsourcing for a slide in class. reply to this with your best attempt to succinctly but comprehensively define the concept of "species" in a single skeet.

What is the evolutionary reason for dogs to love balls so much? It’s too universal and instinctive to not be genetic.

Loeske Kruuk, who has died after a brave battle against cancer, is a terrible loss on so many levels. To evolutionary ecology where she did so much to bring quantitative rigour & insight; to her many colleagues & people whose careers she inspired & nurtured, but most of all to her wonderful family.
