And we went to inspect a spring we'd fenced off last year. And checked exclosures for forced entry.

Just your normal, average sunday afternoon, watering all the plants and chatting with @woodward.ca and @feistywaters.com while Dolly attempts to pursue a very calm jackrabbit and a surprisingly tall and healthy coyote walks down the street...

We found a hole in a new exclosure, the creek washed it open & deer were climbing through. OH wired in a patch, & used t-posts to fill gaps around a gate where they were squeezing in. Inventive beggars.

Work party has come & gone. Deconstructed 2/3rds of an exclosure, salvaged useful poles to build new version. On a very steep hill! Fixed another exclosure, replaced a style with an accessible gate, and deadheaded bags & bags of teasels.

When we put up our garden raised beds next spring, there will be a tall exclosure around them.

Forest landscape restoration through exclosure for revitalization of vegetation diversity and ...
Understanding the role of forest landscape restoration (FLR) is vital to estimate its contribution for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. The study was conducted to estimate vegetation diversity and carbon stock of restored forest landscape through Exclosure (Ex) versus open grazing forest (OGF). Diameter at the breast height and stump height (DBH, DSH), height (H) and herbaceous biomass were measured. Composite soil sample was taken from three soil depths of 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm and 20–30 cm. Vegetation diversity indices were estimated with various methodologies. Biomass carbon stock (BCS) was calculated with allometric equations. The soil organic carbon stock (SOC) was estimated following Walkley–Black method. An Ex has composed of greater number of individual than OGF. Species abundance (Ab), and Shannon diversity (H’) in the Ex were significantly higher than OGF. Croton macrostachyus Hochst.ex Dlile, Bridelia micrantha (Hochst.) Baill and Terminalia laxiflora Engl. & Diels were the domim = nat specie in the Ex whereas Croton macrostachyus Hochst.ex Dlile, Brucea antidysenterica J. F. Mill. And Vernonia abyssinica Sch.Bip.ex Hochst were the dominant speices in the OPG. Species Evenness (J) (0.47 ± 0.09) in the OGF was and significantly higher than Ex (0.10 ± 0.04 Mg C). The total carbon...

Queensland's first big predator exclosure (and a bit of a design failure, initially). Attended the opening, back when.

But these bilbies are outside of it?

“Marty's project is an opportunity to improve the understanding of the exclosure strategy, to find out if it works, and how to optimize it,” says Dan Larkin. I am still not able to understand your point. Exclosures by their definition exclude animals from the exclosure plot.
I am interested in knowing if this study did not follow up some standard ethical practice for exclosures. And what ethical aspects should be considered for setting up exclosures?
July 9, 2026 at 9:26 AM
The experiment was on geese. The exclosure was a tool in that experiment. Useful info: Guidelines for the ethical treatment of nonhuman animals in behavioural research and teaching www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Umm..but it does say "According to national regulations and institutional guidelines, no ethical approval was required." I want to understand your pov. What is the standard practice on ethics for exclosure experiments? What ethical aspects are to be considered for setting up exclosures?
July 9, 2026 at 8:55 AM
Bizarre & misleading ethics statement for experimental research: "Ethics approval. This study involved non-invasive observations of wild animals in their natural habitat." The work was not simply observational as it involved an exclosure experiment.

Brash micro-exclosure, Mar Lodge, created to protect saplings. Now that deer culling is succeeding such structures are no longer needed. Their fortified appearance speaks to the plague of deer. Taken on a trip up Allt Connie to record rutting deer with Chris Watson, July 2017. Photo by Mhairi law.

Sicus ferrugineus, 25th June, 1999, Pondhead Exclosure, New Forest. Larvae of this fly are internal parasitoids of various bumblebees (hence the English name of ‘Bee-grabber’). The male (upper) is 'mate guarding', riding the female after mating to prevent another male copulating with her.

Rocky Mountain National Park leads collaborative in wetlands restoration
At first glance, it looks like an ordinary fence surrounding a large mountain valley meadow. At 9 feet tall and stretching around 31 acres of wetland along Beaver Creek in Rocky Mountain National Park, the exclosure fence doesn’t immediately reveal what is happening inside. But just a few steps inside the gate and the transformation becomes apparent. Water flows where there was dry ground just two years ago. Sedges rise to knee-high and above. Willow shoots, some that were recently believed dead, are sprouting green leaves and producing flowers for the first time in decades. “It’s really early on in its restoration trajectory,” Isabel de Silva Shewell told a tour group at the Beaver Creek exclosure on June 25. “It’s going to take a lot of time for this site to fully recover.” de Silva Shewell, an ecologist with Rocky Mountain National Park, is the project manager for the Kawuneeche Valley Restoration Collaborative (KVRC), “a group of organizations that share the common goal of promoting a healthy and resilient Kawuneeche Valley to benefit ecological, recreational, and economic interests,” according to kvcollab.org. After only two years, project leaders say the Beaver Creek site is already showing signs of hope. The project,...

Outside and inside of a deer exclosure fence, in 2019 and 2026. Main lesson seems to be that deer eat lots of understory plants but don't like sedges. As I understand it, the fence was put in place to protect a yew (Taxus canadensis).
